My 4 day old baby girl wont feed for any longer than 10-15 minutes per feed. She usually refuses the second breast or falls asleep. I know she cant be getting enough milk because of this but she is gaining weight!?? Ive tried everything to wake her up during feeds but she doesnt want to know about it. Should i be concerned? she has about 4-6 wet nappies per day but it is hard to tell sometimes with the poos!!!

She may have a really good efficient suck.

The length of time they spend feeding isn't actually a very good indication, some babies are very efficient, others a bit lazy and others (like my daughter as a small baby) refuse to get off the breast and will throw up to make more room for milk

As long as she's gaining a good amount of weight and having a reasonable number of wet nappies per day then you have nothing to worry about.

She could just be really efficient? Maddi would never take the second breast and fed really fast, gosh I miss those days, shes now fusses around and takes forever to feed.
As long as shes gaining weight and has a good number of wet nappies I wouldnt worry. Sounds like you are doing great!

Hi there

I agree with MrsMojo as Lauren only ever fed for 7 mins on one side. Very rarely would she take both sides. She consistently gained good amounts of weight so I assumed she was just a very efficient feeder!!

I did a bit of a test when expressing and I could express off 200mls in under 10mins. That was enough proof to me that she could get alot off me in a very very short amount of time, especially if she had a good suck on her!

Your doing everything right by the sounds!

Rowan's never taken both sides.
I think you've just got a quick feeder lucky thing.

Taine was the same, gained weight BUT he would need to feed every hour or so and wouldn't sleep. does she sleep for a decent amount after?

Sounds good to me!! 10-15 mins each side is pretty good and she is having lots of wet/dirty naps and is sleeping afterwards so she seems content
Very lucky you have a good little feeder by the sounds of it.

Shes been sleeping well in the last 24 hours and my milk has definitely fully come in because i woke up in a wet nightshirt! She slept over 3 hours in one stretch last night. I feel better now she seems more content and others have had the same experience. Thanks guys

I remember my mw stressing me out by telling me DS must feed for 15 minutes each side. DS is a very effiecent sucker - only take 5mins on one side and he is full for 3-4hours. DS gained weight fast so I know that he is getting enough food.
Your little one might be the same. Focus on the hours of sleep in between feeds and the weight gain thing instead of timing feeds.

congrats on the wee babe.
