Ava is 1 week old and for the past 3 days or so she has been coughing. It is a dry cough and she coughs maybe 5-10 times a day so its not like a coughing fit. We ended up taking her to starship hospital today because i rang my midwife and she said to get it seen to. They couldnt find anything wrong with her and sent us home, but since then she has coughed at least 3-4 times. Im worried. Has anyone else experienced this with their baby?

My friends baby had this for the first couple of weeks as the suction they used on her irritated her mouth/throat a bit. Went away tho :)

we had this with charli when she was a newbie. she was also really wheezy/graspy sounding. they left her to it until she was about 3-4mths old, then did some tests but it came back as nothing. she eventually grew out of it.

just keep an eye on her and note how often she coughs, how she is lying when it happens etc......and if she gets worse or you are still worried, take her back to the dr

Was she suctioned at birth? That's the only thing I can think of. There is a cough associated with reflux but it wouldn't be evident at such a young age.

Chiara developed a nasty cough at 5 weeks and it turned out she had pneumonia but she also had a fever and was quite unwell with it so if Ava doesn't seem unwell it's unlikely to be anything nasty like that.

No, she wasnt suctioned at birth. She has coughed a bit today (3 times or so) but seems happy. Im wondering if she is drinking too fast (she is fully breastfed) or if it is something i am eating (dairy etc).

Is the coughing at specific times? Eg. just after a feed, when she is lying down etc. That might help identify the cause, if it's just after a feed it could be fast let down, if it's when she's lying flat you might need to elevate the cot/bassinette a little if you haven't already.

This morning she coughed when she had been in her pram/carseat and she hadnt been fed for at least 2 hours. Other times it is after a feed or when she is put into her cot. so no specific times. My midwife didnt seem concerned.......but i am!

My mw told me that new babies can cough/sneeze because they swallowed mucus on the way out (yep, totally gross )She said to give my DD a teaspoon of cool boiled water to help clear it.
I hope I am remembering correctly! I guess a bit of water wouldn't hurt wee Ava anyway...
 Love the name btw!

   Thanks :)
I'll give the water a try - she was definitely mucusy when she was born, so that may explain it all!
