Quick question - I gave in and bought a dummy. I hate them, but think Daniel needs it. As soon as it goes in his mouth, he promptly spits it out. Any tips?

Could be the type of dummy? I found the gremlins wouldn't take the newborn size ones, they needed the bigger bulb shaped teats. Could also be that he is a booby man and no silicone imitation comes close!

Hold it in there and eventually he'll start sucking on it. That's if he's a comfort sucker. Otherwise he might just keep spitting it out.

Some teats have more of a ball at the end than others so a different type might help too.

i find the NUK brand ones great as they imitate the shape a breast would take on. we had to hold it in for V initially. i hated them too but when he made me bleed at day 5 & just wanted to keep sucking, (he was a very sucky baby) then we had to do something. godsend i say now! But yea, try holding it in for a while. he'll have to get used to a different sucking motion

Maybe just try a different one. Daniel loved NUK ones but hated tommee tippee ones

I've got the NUK one. He took it while having his bum time, but at bed time, kept spitting it out . I'll keep trying - I guess I can't expect him to take it straightaway (and I actually started crying when he *did* take it cos I hate them so much ).

i found the NUK ones sat in the mouth nicer than any others. when i looked after a lil girl earlier on this year, she has a tommee tippee one but hated it, so i tried her on the NUK ones, and she settled HEAPS easier. mum ended up swapping to NUK brand.

We used NUK ones too. Only for a little while though cause then she found her thumb. Much easier when they can comfort themselves. Now she doesn't want a dummy at all.

My bubs is a NUK bubs too.
Try not to worry too much about using the dummy most bubs will only use it for the first little while because they have a strong suck need but will drop the dummy by themselves.
I offer my bubs the dummy and most times he refuses but when he wants it he sucks it and will let me know when he's done.

Does he really need it???????? i had one soemone gave me and my boy did the same thing......there was NO WAY mummy was gonna get him to have it...........the only reason we were trying is cause i was in hospital and the specialist said it would give me a break...mr independent and all.
My boy has always had a soft toy in bed and his fav is the turtle that you can get the giggles from the supermarket...........he sucks on his tail............he has nothing else............as he got older we tried dummy again and he laughed himself silly..........anway does he really need it or is it just for you? try something else...... goodluck in your decision

It's for his sleeping. We're really struggling with his day sleeps - he's started crying lots when we put him down and we're now sleeping him in his pram and rocking him to sleep - several people have suggested trying a dummy when we put him down and see if he gets comfort from it. The more I read about comfort sucking, the more I accept that dummies can have a role, so I'm prepared to try it, but I won't force it.

If you are having issues with sleep go visit your plunket family centre to get some "hands on" advice they might have some more ideas for you

I did - they recommended rocking and/or dummy .

We'll get there - he's slowly improving with his sleeping but I hate the distressed noise he makes when he goes to bed. But, like I said, if the dummy doesn't work, then it doesn't work.

i went to family centre and they didnt help at all.
Ty still is a bad sleeper but not all babies are the same.

you can try these.
Soft toy that he can suck on
wrapping different ways
ty likes the room pitch black
sometimes he goes in the stroller with blanket over the top
has he got wind.........sometimes we lift the head of the bed up
is he getting enough feed?
occassionallly we have to lie on the floor beside him or in the bed..............we also have lullibies playing ........some people say white noise works but Ty screams when he hears that.
I also found out that if i stress he screams more.........we still do all of these..hope this helps a little.......he may be a baby that needs to cry himself to sleep altough i cant stand that :) you will get there
