    Posted: 01 October 2008 at 10:04am

Hi there, Has anyone used or know of anyone thats used evening primrose oil capsules to prepare the cervix for labour?

If so do you think it's worth trying?

I always go overdue & I have tried other stuff to induce myself around my EDD but have not yet tried Evening Primrose oil...

Any stories good or bad would be much ap[preciated..

Thanks

Oh Im also a very chuncky chick with a very large tummy so it's a tad hard for me to bend and reach places (if you know what I mean) so also any tips on insertion would be good to....

I remember reading on another thread somewhere that you can soak a tampon with the oil and insert that but im not sure if thats correct info or not...

I used them with my second baby.
From 37 weeks I took 2 orally and 2 up the fufu.
I didn't bother poking a hole in them or anything, they just dissolve on their own.
I put them in at night as I went to bed as that way the gel was up there longer to do it's job.
I think the EPO helped me, although there is no way of knowing for sure! I went a week early, had a lovely fast labour and no tears.
With my first (for comparison), I didn't know about EPO and had a 17 hour active labour, on my due date and a second degree tear.
It certainly won't hurt to try it, but if you do insert it vaginally, make sure you put a panty liner on as what goes up, must come down
Good luck!

I did 3 up, 4 down (pierced the ones that went up the fufu) at night for 4 nights from the day before my due date. Jack came at 40+3. Don't know if it worked, but I think it might have helped as he was ready to go but my cervix not being ready was the issue. I was checked at 39+6 and was nowhere near labour, m/w reckoned I'd go well over and would have to be induced so I tried it. Wouldn't hurt to try I guess, plus sex (in the missionary position to squash the baby out lol) helps too!

I used them for a couple of nights after I was overdue, but still went to 9 days over..... it is quite messy (I pierced a hole in them). I don't know if they had an effect or not - I only used them for 2-3 nights, then gave up, and went another 5 or so days. I think the thing that brought labour on in the end was actually giving up hope it was ever going to happen! Lol And I also think the 5W capsules I was taking made for a good, speedy labour (once it was established) - but they obviously didn't start anything early!

Ok cool.

Do you have to push them right up right next to the cervix? And do the capsules disolve also?

I pushed up as far as I could lol they capsules do dissolve, they're liquid capsules. You get them from the supermarket in 500mg or 1000mg strength. I took the 1000mg as was due but maybe taking the 500mg would be better for earlier on? I know that you shouldn't take the 5W stuff etc until 35 weeks so this would probably be the same.

You don't need to push them right up, like you would with a tampon. I just put it as far up as I could reach around my giant bump, lol!

Hi ladies,

Where can I buy 5W tabs?? And are they actually called that, or do they go by another name on the label?

TIA

Re: Semen, Apparently so.  I think it would depend on how ready your body is but im not 100% sure how it works. I know it's got prostaglandins(sp) also.

From memory (don't quote me) there is a hormone, could be prostaglandin, that helps to "ripen" the fluid sac, and speeds up water breaking process.
I wonder though that it would only be effective if the show has been lost? Otherwise the semen would not be able to reach the sac?

*Rushes off to google*

It would be interesting to find out. I doubt sex is going to be at the fore front of my mind at that stage so i'm not going to do it unless it's going to help!! LOL

Anyway, that's what got me in this state to begin with!!

FYI: semen does help ripen the cervix. due to the hormone. and yes it still does help if you haven't lost the plug. sometimes the plug won't come away until your waters break which isn't always at the start of your labour.

Yep I took them orally and my MW is sure that is what helped my cervix be "ripe" early enough for a good induction.

I also drunk Raspberry leaf tea with peppermint and that I think helped too.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Yeah I was drinking the raspberry leaf tea also. 3 cups a day from 36 weeks.
Apparently the tea is more effective than the capsules.
