Topic: Pregnancy pillows Posted: 27 October 2008 at 11:19am |
Has anyone got experience using a pregnancy/body pillow? Is it comfortable? What kind do you use?
Before I got pregnant I always used to sleep on my (left) side. However lately I keep rolling over on my back or even my tummy, which is not that comfortable.
For some reason I can't seem to stay on my side anymore. I wonder if a pregnancy pillow would help, and whether that is comfy.
Very interested to hear any experiences.

I've never used one....but ever since I got pregnant with my first 16 years ago I have always liked the support a pillow can give in the tummy area. So with subsequent pregnancies I just used extra pillows rather than buying a pregancy pillow. So not much help lol
But I have read in forums that some women love the pregnancy pillows.

I am using one, but it's not quite helpful, especially after 25 weeks, I can not stop rolling all the night. And I found I will feel better when I lying down instead of side, so I will stay lying down for a few time.

I've just started using a spare normal pillow pushed up against my side, so that I'm cuddling it, which seems to help a little. But I've been getting sore hips from lying on one side for too long, so still have to change sides during the night.

I used a tripillow and found that good. one side tucked in between my legs with the other going up under my belly for support.

Yep I did and am doing exactly as kebakat said, plus then you can use that same pillow for breastfeeding and then also for support when they are learning to sit. Far more value for money than a pregnancy pillow.

I just raided our spare bed for pillows - ended up having pillows everywhere in the end! I found it best to have one under my top leg (I would lay on my side with my top leg across like in the recovery position) and one behind me (not to stop me rolling over, it was just comfy to lean back against it). Still ended up waking up a few times each night to roll over.
My only problem was DH used to sometimes steal my pillows in the night - he thought it was comfy under his leg too!
Didn't bother with a BF pillow either - just used 2 spare pillows for the first couple of weeks (with 1 pillowcase stretched over both of them so I only had to grab one thing) and then went down to 1 pillow.

I am sooo struggling with bed time now, I don't look forward to it. I have tried the tri pillow by sleeping higher up in bed, and also to snuggle it but found it too cumbersome and I have tried lying with a pillow under my top leg (if I am lying on my side) and also a pillow stuffed against my back to wedge me on my side, but then I suffer from hip pain....
Oh to be able to lie on my back again
I also find with too many pillows that I get too hot or I roll around so much that they fall off the bed...I would love a magic fix, but I guess I gotta keep trying the combinations, either that or stand up to sleep

I did the same as kebakat or just slept on my back. Have always been a tummy sleeper so I found that hard not to do. I also had a smaller rectangle cushion which I put behind my back to keep me on my left side as had to get Lily to move to that side in the last 10 weeks.

Thanks for your input. When I said pregnancy pillow, I actually meant a tripillow. I now get the impression they're not the same thing?????
I think I'm going to try one. Like Kelzbelz, I find too many pillows in bed such a struggle ( I tried just extra normal pillows).
Hopefully it will work.

a pregnancy pillow is a really really long pillow that goes the length of the body(i got one and it wasn't any better than normal pillow) and Dh struggled to fit in the bed as well:) I just used normal pillows in the end:)

I brought a tri pillow on the weekend and not sure how I should sleep with it so I will try what kebacat does and see if that helps. I have woken up a few times on my back with pins and needs in my arms and legs.

I just used two normal pillows, one in between my legs and one down my back to stop me rolling onto my back.
With this pregnancy i'm using a little wedge type pillow which goes underneath your bump.
Ella - I'm sure I move heaps more in bed during pregnancy, I always slept on my side and never on my back, which is where I keep ending up now.

^^ not sure if there is an actual time, I guess when you get bigger the weight can restrict blood flow to baby I guess, or out pressure on your back? I'm not actually 100% sure when or why though.

Hi there
I brought a "cuddle buddy" which is like a full length body pillow, and super squishy! depending on what part of NZ you live, I think they sell them in malls etc and there are different sized from neck pillows right up to the full body length one. I have used mine every night since about 16 weeks and am 28 weeks now. I am amazed it hasn't ended up on the floor by morning! this is really neat too as it can be folded up like a tripillow if you are ever lucky enough to sit up in bed to get a cup of coffee!
I was also told you can also wrap them around you which helps with b/feeding after the baby is born. Probably easiest if you google cuddle buddy (its all clean!) I think the crowd that sells them is called psmarketing or something.
Sweet dreams!
