Topic: How bout Pre natal Depression?? Posted: 30 October 2008 at 2:09pm |
Hi,
I dont know whether this is the appropriate place to ask, but did any of you with Post Natal Depression have Pre natal depression too??
The reason I ask, is that I am worried I might be affected/showing symptoms of/suffering from pre natal D. I havent felt this low since I was 16 when I was struggeling quite badly with depression (though not clinical, I worked through it in other ways).
As with back then, I think it is triggered by the hormones.
When I talk to DP about it, I cant find any reasons for feeling so low- I should feel happy- but I am just empty, and cry.
I am going to talk to my mw about it on Monday, but I am worried that if I feel like this now- Im going to feel worse when the baby is born. To be honest- I cant even comprehend what the next 6 months have in store.
Has anyone got any experience with pre natal depression??

Hi,
I don't have any personal experience with pre-natal D but my friend did and she also went on to suffer post-natal D. But she never told anyone until a few months after her baby was born and she wishes she had of said something when she was preggy. I think it's a good idea to tell someone now so you can get anyy support you want/need
Hugs

Pick me! And like Brenna said I wish I had dealt with it at the time instead of stubbornly trying to battle on coz I ended up with severe PND that has continued on thru my subsequent pregnancy and birth.
I'm sure there was a thread on this recently, I'll track it down, if not I'll elaborate more, I just don't want to write my story all over again unneccessarily!

Hi there, i think it may be called ante-natal depression.
I only know this cos ive looked it up breifly. Thought i may have it aswell.
Although i have a lot going on at the moment and yeah... this isnt about me so wont bore you haha
Well i think it would be a good idea to talk to your midwife about it, as it may carry through to after baby is born.
Maybe you could let us know what a professional thinks??
Good luck

thanks ladies,
I will be seeing mw on Mon, so will talk to her about it. Ironically I feel much better today, though I have found it comes and goes, I get whammied.
I have a friend who reccomended seeing a councellor, perhaps that would suit me?
I was also told it could be linked to my liver not coping very well with the pregnancy. Having stopped all milti vits, and keeping it all simple, perhaps thatll help too.
Either way- I will update with any advise I am given.
thanks again xx

Hey KitKat
I felt quite low with my first pregnancy, but I'm not sure whether that was just because I felt so sick all the time!
I also got quite down and found it really hard to handle for months after Chloe was born... I think a lot of that was a combination of sleep deprivation, bad labour, breastfeeding issues, etc. as things improved for a while when I was getting more sleep and once I finished BF. There was concern that I had PND, but I didn't do anything about it. Then when I found out I was pregnant again, everything went to crap!! I'm not sure if it can be called PND or antenatal depression, or both... I just call it PND cos it's easier But I was convinced by DH and plunket to go see a Dr, and I did... she was lovely and organised support and so on, and I started on meds. I'm feeling SO much better these days.
Definitely talk to your MW, and your Dr if things get any worse. Hormones can do crazy things to your emotions especially when you are dealing with so many new changes and things to learn.
Try not to worry about PND as well... things will be tiring and hard for a little bit after you have bubba, but it is all worth it and it gets better. And if you just keep feeling down, definitely talk to your Dr or Plunket nurse and get some support. I promise that things improve, when you acknowledge what's going on
Sorry for the big ramble! I'm really tired this afternoon, I don't know how much sense I am making.
Lovely to meet you, BTW

I had it, went on meds and didn't get PND. I have had depression off and on my whole adult life, tho, so it was a worry for me, but luckily never happend. Have a good chat with your GP.

Yeah, i had it also. I went on Anti-D's at about 10weeks. Didnt get PND but i think that was due to me still being on the meds when i talked to someone about my feelings when briahna was born they told me that was the beginnings of PND so that scared the hll out of me..
TBH i dont think i could have survived without the meds, i was a mess. I would cry myself to sleep every single night without fail. I broke down cryin the the docs office, i was so embarrased lol.
But if you need to talk, feel free to pm.
And like fattarts said you should talk to your GP about it too.

Hey I had it pre-natally and although I haven't quite slipped into PND since Cian was born I've bordered on it several times! Like everyone else has said the best thing you can do is talk to someone about it - I talked to my MW but anyone you feel comfortable with is good! Biggest help for me was cutting back at work - I stopped working a day a week and it made an amazing difference in my coping ability... I think recognising the depression then has made it easier for me since the birth cause I know what to look out for and can do something about it before it gets to that point again...
good luck
