I'm looking at setting up an interior design service based from home. All the design work will be done at my home but consultations and presentations will most likely be at client's homes.
Do any of the knowledgable ladies out there know what (if any) insurance I will need?

I think, although I'm not sure, that there is a clause in most house insurance policies that you have to tell them if you are using the house for a business.
I presume you'll need some form of liability insurance as well.
Not much help am I? Hopefully someone wiser than me will be along soon.

I did forget about the house thing though - yes, definitely do tell them, although it usually doesn't affect your policy unless a certain percentage of the house is being used for the business - if it's just one room it should be ok, the biggest thing is the contents insurance and any of your work contents.

If you are using a seperate room in your house as your office you may be able to claim some of your home and contents insurance you would need to talk to an accountant about this. Try looking on the net i think there are web pages about setting up small businesses.
You may also want to look at other forms of insurance too.

Thanks ladies.,,and thanks for your PM Kate.  I found a website that mentioned personal indemnity insurance (???) for people offering consultancy based services which I think would be me..it sounds like its the same/similar to the liability one.

yeah it is and its a good idea to have. Do you any professional bodies that you could join as they often have deals when it comes to PI cover. They may also have other resources you can ue.

Professional Indemnity is more focussed towards professions such as accountancy, law, financial advice etc, as it covers you where your advice has been negligent and resulting in loss for the client. As an interior designer, your advice isn't really going to be negligent as I'm assuming the client has to agree with the concepts prior to the work being done. It would be applicable if you were going to be suggesting perhaps building moderations that may end up not being suitable for the home however?
Does that make sense?

And it's different to the liability one as well - liability is where loss is caused to a third party by you in the course of your work - so physical damage for example. Professional Indemnity relates to advice being given that is negligent - so damage caused as a direct result of your advice (which has to be negligent).

I work from home also as a town planning consultant and have professional indemnity insurance. I organised this through my professional body. So I agree with the comments above - maybe check with your professional body about insurance.
