Nathaniel is stuck in Wanganui tonight. He went to Palmerston North this morning for a meeting of some sort (further training for first and second year teachers, or something like that). One of the other teachers went too, and that teacher's girlfriend who is visiting him for a few days.

After Nat got up in the early hours of the morning he saw it had started snowing... Richard (the other teacher) and Nat decided to go anyway and I kept them up to date on the roads... the Desert Road (SH1 Turangi to Waiouru) has been closed since last night due to the snow and the next stretch of SH1 from Waiouru to Taihape closed just after Nat and the others passed through.

This afternoon, Taimarunui to Raetahi was closed... leaving over the Paraparas from Wanganui as the only way back. For those of you who don't know the area, the road over the Paraparas (SH4) is hideous! It is a windy, tretcherous stretch of road that only seems to exist as an alternative route when the Desert Road is snowed in. And guess what: there was a landslip on the Paraparas, shutting the road!

Nathaniel, Richard and Jess (Richard's girlfriend) decided to head for Wanganui in the hopes that SH4 would be reopened by the time they got there. As you've guessed, no such luck. The road probably won't be opened until tomorrow. Nat and the others are staying with Nat's uncle and aunty in Wanganui tonight... and I'm home alone with the kids. It's not the first night I've spent without Nat since we got married, but it is the first unexpected one!

Its 1 degree outside at the moment... its pretty much stopped snowing, but enough snow has fallen today that there is about 5cm on the ground outside our house!

Both the kids are asleep... no nonsense from Kiya tonight, it was a quiet house from the moment they were tucked in. The fire is warming the house nicely... I think I might go and have a nice hottish bath with a good book before I curl up in bed.

Oh the paraparas!!! Ugly road. First time I saw it was travelling in a unimog - very scarey. Actually its scarey anytime. I remember driving it to go to wangas by myself and it was pouring. Quite freaky. Especially when you encount oncoming traffick. Anyway enough from me.
Oh well stoke up the fire and relax and enjoy your own company.

I know the paraparas. many a lunch was lost going over them. I grew up in Taumarunui so occasionally we'd venture over to Wanganui...ick ick ick.
I'm driving to gisborne this weekend and a bit worried about the gorges going through. Hoep we get through all right.

Becca - hang tight!   He must just about be heading home now right?

As of right now (8:30am) the road is still closed.

The buses are not running, but the primary and college are still open ... Kiya's staying home today anyway... the snow that fell yesterday has not melted in any way, and there is more forcast for today and tomorrow!

She was all ready to go to school yesterday, then slipped on the way to the car! I sent the others off (we carpool, and Sue does the morning run) and Kiya came back inside until she felt better and her nasty graze had stopped hurting as much. About 10am, she was ready to go to school... we walk into the office to find the secretary and the principal phoning parents to check someone would be home when the kids got off the bus! Bonny (principal) told me I might as well take Kiya home again! I told her that we carpool and she told me which classrooms the boys were in... I went and got them and we all came back here... nice and warm! It was 1pm before we managed to get hold of Sue to let her know where her sons were, but we managed to get hold of her before she headed to the primary to pick them up after it officially closed!

I've just heard from Nat... they are going to leave Wanganui at 10:30, so I'm assuming they've heard that the road over the Paraparas will be opened by then. Unfortunately, the road between Raetahi and Ohakune is currently closed!

YAY, we have a huge family birthday this wekend and being a Harris family there is going to be a lot of people there. But a lot of them are in Tauranga or Taupo and don't have a hope of getting down for it unless they can get flights or the roads open before Saturday.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
