I dont know whether to believe that she is still alive out there, or if she's gone. It's been a long time since she went missing but then again there have been cases of young girls being captive for years so I'm on the fence for this one.

I really don't know what to think...

To start with I would never ever leave children alone no matter how old they are. I am totally stumped though as to why she was the one "taken" when there were other children sleeping in the same hotel room as her.

Why they didnt get a babysitter or a nanny or someone to mind the kids that night I just do not understand.

I also can't help but think that maybe the parents had some sort of involvement in the whole thing... as they are obviously STUPID leaving their little girl and their other children un-watched.

Wasn't their no sign of a break-in.... ????

That's exactly why I think she was kidnapped to be raised as someone elses child.  She was the youngest therefore she'd be the easiest to reprogramme IYKWIM.

Although I think it's absolutely awful for the family my hope is that Madeleine is being raised in a loving home by someone that desperately wanted a child.  I've read a few fictitious books where the main character (unbeknowst to her or her adoptive parents) was kidnapped, I'd like to believe that something similar happened and that Madeleine is loved and well cared for.

I agree with the other comments that I would never ever ever leave my children alone unsupervised.  Kinapping is only one scenario in which it could go horribly wrong and I think it was an irresponsible thing to do.

ETA: Oops, thanks Kelly.  I obviously didn't follow the story well enough (infact I choose not to read about things like this because they upset me too much)

I dont know how they could have left their children alone (especially in a foreign country ) however , I think whats happened has been punishment enough and obviously if they could turn the clock back now , and change it , they would .

I think the portuguese police did a pretty sh*t job quite frankly and decided to put the blame on the parents because it was the easier thing to do , all their so called "evidence" led to nothing , and i find it really hard to believe that people who went through fertility treatment to concieve her , would kill her either purposely or accidentally , and I find it very hard to believe that if they did kill her accidentally that they would just leave her body , and not give her a proper funeral .
Im not naive, and im not an idiot, I know that in a lot of cases the parents are responsible, but I dont believe that in this case.

I dont think she'll ever be found , i dont know whether i think shes dead or alive, but I dont think she'll ever come home .
Having your child missing and no answers , must be the most awful feeling in the world, I wouldnt like to be in their shoes

hmm i really don't know i often wondered why she was the one taken while there were others kids in the room. I would have though they would have heard or seen something unless they were either threatened to keep quiet or it was somebody who knew them. i do hope though that If and only if she is still alive she is well looked after. if it is found that its the alternative them i am sure she is looking down on here family.

I posted this on another topic but leaving children alone in hotel rooms sleeping is VERY common with the wealthier British families. I'm not saying they all do it, but it is common. I guess they think its all ok cos they are still on the premises, just not in the actual room.

At first I thought she'd been murdered, but as there has been no body found, I'm thinking more along the kidnapping idea.
I've travelled through Portugal they have their own rules quite different from english speaking countries.
I can't understand why they didn't get a baby sitter either, surely it wouldn't be that difficult in a hotel.

I'm very sceptical on this issue, the parents seem a bit odd (but of couse seeing as I don't know them, I just know what the media chooses to show us), also the blood in their car, and the fact she was the only one 'taken' leads me to believe it was somewhat of an inside job. Not saying the parents did it, but someone had to know the kids were alone, that the other kids wouldn't scream, possibly have access to the car, be seen with the child leaving the hotel and not have any eyebrows raised and flee the country (or kill her) without anyone raising any concerns. That to me spells either inside job, or very well thought out and executed plan.

But to be honest, while it's sad that's she been taken from her family, I get really pissed off about this topic. Did anyone watch the doco about the thousands of kids that go missing every year in portugal, one family with 3 kids being abducted all at once a few years ago, and there was no worldwide media coverage. Just shows you what power white, wealthy, good looking people have in our world really.

Last year, in England , there was a girl who was abducted, she came from a poorer background, and there was heaps of complaints that she didnt recieve as much coverage as Madeleine McCann .
They found this girl , alive , thank God , tho who knows what long term damage she will suffer .
Personally , while I can see why people get upset because Madeleine McCann got so much coverage and others dont, to me it doesnt matter, take away the white upperclass background and leave the bare facts ,and Madeleine is just like any other child, alone and scared (if she is still alive) and far from her home .
Thats a sad thing .

I dont want to pass judgement on her parents, while sometimes to me the mother looks a bit ...."hard" , i do not know what it is like to have your daughter missing , whilst having to provide some sort of stability for your remaining children .

There was an article last year, that put so many holes in the Portuguese policy theory it was funny .
Perhaps it will be years and years til we get any answers, but , like the case of JonBenet Ramsay , answers eventually come , somehow , (not that they have found HER killer, but they have finally found DNA on her underpants that belonged to an outside source and her parents finally cleared )
One day perhaps we'll have answers to this case too

I think she was stolen by a paedophile ring to order in a very well thought out plan.
Not sure how much coverage it got in NZ but they released some of the information the Portuguese police had and didn't look into soon enough (or well enough, or at all!) and one of those things was anonymous pictures of Madeleine taken the day of her disappearance and a 'confirmation' message in return. It sounds like she was taken straight down to the beach (there were sightings of a sleeping child being carried by a man) and then put on a jet ski (there were sightings of something in a big black bag being put on a jet ski) out to a boat and then taken across to Morocco.
I figure if they were looking to replace or raise a child then they would have taken one of the babies.
I think in all likelihood she would have been killed as soon as it became such a big international story as it would have been too risky to keep her alive. I hope that thats true in some way as the alternative is just to awful to think about

I don't think they should have left their kids alone in that room- but they have paid the ultimate price haven't they? I would never wish that on anyone

I was living in the UK when she went missing and I don't know what the coverage was like in NZ, but boy oh boy did I get sick of this story.

I'm not sure I think - it's a tragedy and I know the parents are an easy target - but I always found it weird how in the days following Madeleine's disappearance, her mother always appeared on the camera looking totally immaculate - and I'm talking matching her earrings and bracelet immaculate, if it was me I'd be falling apart ... and how she didn't go out looking for Madeleine, again if it was me I'd go crazy waiting around at home while everyone else was out looking.

It's easy to try and discredit the Portuguese police as not being as credible as the UK police, for example, but I find it hard to believe they'd manufacture evidence to blame the parents, when obviously that would be unpopular foreign-relations wise.

Just wondering ,...how long has it actually been since she went missing ? its over a year now isnt it ?

I must say , and no offence to anyone , that I have always found it interesting how quickly her parents (particularly her mother ) were judged for their behaviour ,people saying "if it was me i would do this or that"....thats all very well to say when you are sitting at home and your children are safe around you , who knows how any of us would act until we were actually in that situation .
Perhaps her looking immaculate etc was her one way of having some control in her life .

I agree with Jen , I think she would have been killed as soon as it became public knowledge, too risky etc, ....and compared to what she would have gone through , death would probably have been the kinder option .
I guess for parents of children missing, all they want at the end of the day , is answers , somewhere , a grave , to visit .

On the leaving your child alone in a hotel. We encountered this just last weekend. At Camp with Playcentre. Everyone put their kids to bed at about 7 and then we went and had food in the hall. Only two of us (we only have one child each) kept our kids up and had food with us so we went to bed a bit earlier than others.

I didnt know if it was because both of us is from South Africa (where it is just not done). Kids were fine, mums were fine. So I do think it is a cultural thing. I know we discussed this on another forum as well (SA one). And the people from other countries actually say that it happens quite often that kids get left in a hotel and the parents go out ect. Specially in Europe. If it is done by the majority usually you will feel pretty safe to do it as well, as that is what you grew up with.

My first reaction when I heard about the story was: How irresponsible to have left the kids. But thinking about it. That is what they most propably grew up with so who am I to judge that mom or dad.

I feel terribly sorry for them for not knowing either way what happened to their daughter. That must be the worst, the not knowing.

On the other kids not been taken. There can be loads of reasons. Perhaps it might have been someone that has lost a child recently of the same age as this girl. So therefore only took this girl ect.

I just think it is a very sad situation all around.

As for her being immaculate dressed. People grieve in different ways and deal with stress in total different ways. Some people fall to pieces on the outside and cant deal with it at all. Others tries to control what they can to try and keep above water.

You dont know what you will do in a situation when it comes up. You think you might know what you will do but once it happens....
