SO, poor Ava. I changed her formula from Gold to plain because she was uncomfortable and constipated. It made a difference for a day or so, but then she got WAY worse - pulling her legs up, crying uncontrollably, spitting up a bit, farting constantly and STILL constipated.
I took her to the doctor today and she thinks Ava may be lactose intolerant, so I'm trialling Neocate formula. Has anyone else used Neocate and how long did it take to notice a difference?
Hi my boy is on neocate, he's been on it since 4 months. Basically his constipation cleared within days and his ezcema cleared after a couple of weeks. All his signs off reflux (the leg pulling, back arching, screaming at feeds and projectile vomiting) stopped pretty much immediately. He did continue to be a spilly baby until about 7 months though, but was no longer upset by it.
Also I'm not a doc (but most are useless when it comes to allergies anyway), but I would say that she is actually allergic to cow's milk protein which is entirely different to being lactose intolerant.
Basically lactose intolerance is a defficiency in the enzyme needed to break down lactose (the sugar that is in dairy, and is also in breastmilk), an allergy to the protein is an immune reaction. Lactose intolerance normally causes vomiting and diahorrea, whereas cow's milk protein allergy causes ezcema, constipation, reflux and in severe cases breathing problems.
If the neocate works give 0800 NEOCATE a ring and their nutricianist will send you out an allergy booklet with info on introduces solids etc. There is only a couple of them so you might need to leave a message but they are always quick to ring back.
