sounds like a silly topic I know, but dh and I have a dog that we love to pieces, a 2 year old 55kg bull mastiff, anyway she is pretty big but very gentle although she looks very scarey to people who dont know her...my question is this - for those of you who have pets, dogs (or cats I suppose), who are used to getting all the attention, is there anything specific you are going to do to make sure the introduction of the new family member goes well? I have heard horror stories of dogs not accepting new babies as they see them as lower down in the "pack" or they get jelous, I dont think our dog will be a problem but I always live by the golden rule that no matter how well you think you know your animal always assume they will behave unpredictably - it's just one of those things you have to think when you are dealing with larger breeds... any one else thoguht about this or wondering similar things?

when xanthe was born we had a german shepard who had been our baby up till then. we just made sure that he was able to sniff her when we brought her home, and then we made sure that he had supervised access to her if he was interested in the noises/smells she made. he never had more than a little interest in her, but would sleep out side her door when she was in her room. If she moaned or wheezed he would always look at her funny, as if saying "what does that mean?"
Sadly we had to get him put down when x was about 10 months old.
other people will be anxious, but you know your dogs boundaries, you can build up slowly the amount of time your dog spends around your baby. I think you already have a very responsible attitude of "no matter how well you think you know your animal always assume they will behave unpredictably" - we tried to do the same with our large dog, and i think it was successful with getting him comfortable with the baby.
You will have to deal with the issues of crawling/moving baby later on, which is where the problems of top dog and pack mentality often come in. there is a lot of information you can use on the internet, from what i remember the main things are never let the child around the animals food - that is a classic place for top dog aggression to act out, and when you chastise your child, the dog will see it as the pack is putting a lower member of the pack in its place, so will likely to do the same. As far as he is concerned baby is lowest in the low! Just try to avoid those situations as much as possible ( cant really say for sure, as the dog was gone by the time we came to that.)
Sorry for the novel

Hi there - I know what you're going through, we have a cat (boy cat) who is very unpredictable around everyone (overly playful!) I was really worried about him around Fabian, so when we came home with him, I made sure my husband (or one of us) was making a fuss over the cat and now he sees Fabian and although I won't let him get too near, he either stays away from him or rubs up against him and dribbles everywhere (really pitiful for a male cat!)so I still don't trust the cat around him, but he knows he is still our baby too!

I have a cat who is likely to get jealous of baby when she comes along. Someone suggested I should use an outfit that baby has worn and let the cat sniff it to get used to the smell. Other than that, I'll probably just have one stroppy cat on my hands!

A friend of mine has a family dog that had always been great around their baby, but one incident where she fed the baby close to the dog resulted in the baby being bitten by the dog! She didn't put the dog down, but now she never has the child + dog + food combination as it brings out the dogs competative nature..

We have a Lovely Dopey Lick you to death Golden Retriever who is only 18months old - Charlie. I am not worried at all about him doing anything at all to the baby. We have had about 6 dogs and I have never had a problem with any of them. Friends have had a Goldie to while there little girl has grown up and he does not even bother with her.
I will be introducing him and letting him have a sniff and I know he will be one of those dogs who is more likely to sit under the cot all day and freak out when the baby cries!! Very protective.

I have heard some not so nice stories about cats and new babies..I would be more worried about a cat than a dog. (Mind you I guess it depends on the type/nature of the dog)

My Sil and Bil have a 15 month old and a wee dog (lap dog), the dog Hates their wee boy and still growls at him all the time. The dog was definately her wee baby before Their wee boy was born. Fortunately the dog has a massive underbite and can't bite anything front on, which I think is the only thing that saves its skin.
We have a big sooky almost 3year old lab, she has a really nice nature and I feel pretty much comfortable with her being around kids.
I think she will be a fairly protective dog, well I am hoping. Can't imagine not having her although if there are any problems, my In laws live on a farm and will be very happy to have her.

We have had no problem with our dog, a couple of days before I came home from th maternity unit my hubby had brought home an outfit piper had been wearing (the nurse said it might help) and let sherry sniff it and then when I came home put piper on the floor to investigate. Now when ever the dog comes inside if she cant see piper anywhere she will look for her, even goes and sniffs her cot to see if shes in there

I don't think we'll have an issue with our 3 cats...they make themselves pretty scarce around kids anyway!

Thing will be giving them attention as well and not leaving them alone with bubs.

carmel and kelpa....our dog is too   before i came home, dean brought clyde up to the hospital to meet jack (outside of course) and as soon as clyde saw him he was licking jack to death
clyde is such a laid back dog, jack will climb all over him and he just lays there. jack is also around german shephards alot as my parents have 5 (they are breeders).
we were always very watchful of jack with the dogs and will teach him to be respectful and careful of animals, no matter how big or small

We have a boxer who is 3 years old but is still like a puppy - thinks everyone is his friends and can get rather excited when visitors come around (Carmel can vouch for this) I am not worried about Flynn though, I just plan to let him have a good ole sniff and then tell him to go lie down (basically can just mean go away) Flynn is use to kids as he'll let Brooke (8) do anything really.   I had heard that taking a blanket or suit home for the dog to sniff before you come home with the baby can help although do not plan to do this as I am only going to spend one night in the home before coming home.
When my son was born we had a big german shepard he was the dog of the house but once again let him sniff then he wasn't even bothered (except dare I say it in the dirty nappys in the container he manged to get open and lick where 'poo's had been -yuck!!) when Josh began to crawl the dog (called prince) growled at him my dad gave him a big wack and he never did it again. I guess its like when you got the dog you set who is the top of the pack and whose the bottom so its just another one you have to make sure to the dog he knows it above him/her.

we have a newfoundland and he has been fine both times we have babies home. We just let him smell them and made sure he kept a reasonable distance. Max doesnt know his own strength though and it was the times when he would turn around and his tail would hit the baby or he would get up and accidentally hit him. Unfortunately we might have to find Max a new home now cos he is getting really old and Kobe is at the age where he just wants to jump on poor old max and pushes and pulls at him all the time and so far max just lets him do anything but Im worried that one day he will snap at Kobe or even Addy. I just dont think I want to take tht risk
