I've always wanted to adopt an orphan from another country (Damn Angelina cramping my style). It was Russia first, but I've heard it's pretty damn difficult to get one of them, so now I'd take what I could get, though preferably from a 3rd world country.

Am I the only one that has this crazy notion of saving the world through adopting orphans?!?!? (And who knows when this is going to happen, but it's factored into my 20 year plan )

We had a look into the literature and procedures ourselves incase it turned out we had a major problem and wouldn't be able to have kids (yeah we were preparing for every outcome!).

It is pretty rigorous process to go through but reading the stories it looked worth it! Costs a bomb though!

Oh I thought about it...specially because my Dad is from Bangladesh and the state that country is in, is just horrible. But having said that my Uncle is doing really poorly there, no job and all. My dad adopted his Son...so that he can have a good life. I tell you what It does cost an arm and a leg. Dad paid $3.5K for the lawyers and he did nothing!! then the visa cost, this cost that cost. It took 2.5 years to process the damn thing.......

I lived in Africa for 20 years and when I left I htought that maybe one day I would go back and steal some kiddies and take them away from the world they have there, and I would still love to do that, but it is really expensive and the governments have huge amounts of red tape for you to get through so it's actually a really hard procedure - which doesnt make sense cos if you saw all the kids living on the streets (literally ON TEH STREETS) that I had seen with no mum or dad you would think surely they would make it easy for people to help - but no, they dont!
Its sad - I'd like to think taht someday I woudl be in a position to adopt a child in need, but the reality is you need a lot of cash...and who knows where I will get that from?

I donate money to unicef every month and I wish I could do a bit more...but at the moment I cant. But I told hubby if we ever win lotto...we will do some thing like this!!

I'd like to too Niki. It's hard though. Lewis' ex just adopted an 8year old Russian girl. She has lots of problems though from malnutrition. Also, my in-laws were looking aftr her sisiters baby,m who was a crack-baby. now, it was a lovely idea, but the baby had Soooooo many problems, it was really hard on the other kids, so they gave the baby to her grandmother where she is now.

Maybe I'll do it when Hannah is grown up. (More likely to actually have money then too... maybe.)

I'm just feeling all humanitarianish at the moment. I'm hopefully starting work with a Somali Women's Group soon That might satisfy some of my "save the world" urges.

I lived all over Roksana - Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. I must admit that the worst place for street kids was in in South Africa - it is really bad there esp in the big centres like Durban and Cape Town. My father worked on contract for the mines so we moved around like every year to a new place...
Zim used to be a pretty rich country (my dad actually comes from Zim) but judging from what some of my friends who live there say about it now it has become pretty poor!
I am planning a trip back there next year with DH and i think he is going to be pretty shocked, he has never been to Africa and I am not sure what he expects, but then again there are so many beautiful places and cool people it totaly makes up for seeing the harsher side of it I guess...

I've always wanted to foster children. My mother has been a social worker for years, and is now an advocate for the Childrens Commissioner, and the sad sad stories I hear from her about little children who just want someone to love them just totally break my heart There are so many little ones here in NZ who have absolutely horrible lives, I would love to help even just one to feel what it's like to be loved.

It's funny that you should mention this now... I found out the other day that a friend from work has three Russian brothers! And other family friend adopted three russians kids too! I think it is very hard to do and veeery expensive, I also think they are changing the rules and making it harder to do. But then again, seeing the three little russians that the friends have adopted (ok, so they are not little anymore but they were when they got here!) it is amazing the changes in them!

I have always wanted to foster kids too, my mum did it and I want to do it myself. Andy is not so keen tho but I think that is the police factor, I think he is a bit wary of letting other kids into the house when our kids are little. I guess, being a cop, he sees some things that may put one off?

i agree Roksana - totally sad situation!

I know a lady who adopted a little girl from China, she is the most gorgeous little thing I have ever encountered... and apparently they have heaps of kids there that really need help, but I dont really know enough about the situation to comment, I mean you hear all these things but until you go there and see for youself it's hard to know isnt it?

All I can say is that I really admire those people who have spent so much money and emotion on helping a child who needs it - I really think it is one of the most noble things anyone can do...!
