I'm really concerned about Taine. For about a week he just hasn't been himself. But nothing serious to go to the doctor.

Not interested in food
Not interested in playing - only watches tv
Lies down rather than sitting up
Cries a lot over minor things
seems sleepy, but doesn't sleep
isn't interested in walking - wants me to carry him

This morning he woke up crying - very pale with big dark circles around his eyes. Eventually he got his colour bag, but all this just doesn't add up to my well, cheerful, run-around little boy.

I'm going to take him to the doctor on monday, but to be honest, I've been reading Kyah's jounral and am probably paranoid.

You are allowed to be paranoid. But that doesn't sound like a normal Taine.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

You are far from a Drama Queen!

We all know that Mummies know best .. and the things we know best are our kids.

If you have a feeling there is something wrong then there probably is .. dont doubt yourself and get him checked out.

But please .. dont jump to the worst conclusion you can draw (which is hard for a Mummy) it could be as simple as its blardy hot and icky at the moment .. Isabelle is decidedly grumpy when its hot and humid and she cant sleep.

Or she could be teething .. or growing ... argh I have no idea!

they need to come with a "problems" thing - like my washing machine. It stops working and flashes "E20" or some other number. i look it up on the net and it says "drain blocked" I need some kind of thing like this for Taine - cause I am automatically jumping to the worst case scenario, rather then "coming down with cold"- although this is unlike him coming down with.....aaaaaahhhhhh. This mummy stuff is tough

My guess is that he's too hot to sleep and eat properly. Keep up his water intake and add some milk drinks and/or popsicles to help.

These are the things that scare me about being a parent. How do you know what's wrong with them when they can't tell you?

My cat is sick and I want to burst into tears everytime I look at her. Doubt i'm going to be much better with Madelyn.

AND the worst thing about sick kids - you walk into the doctor and suddenly they are running about and giggling - and you have to explain "no seriously, he was sick about two minutes ago" Lucky my doctor takes me seriously at all

Its so hard when they cant tell you whats wrong. Suggest you get the doc to look at his ears too - may have a small earache or something similar. All the best.

He might have a UTI... Nyah got like Taine when she had one, and they did tests and thats what it came down to.

Has there been any other changes at home that could be making him feel like down or depressed?

quite a few - my grandmother used to look after him, but that was always a temporary situation. Now he has spent the last two weeks with me, but is enrolled to be at daycare t,w,t and f - full days. Do kids get depressed?
I mean, he has always been more sensitive to change, but this doesn't "feel" like that.

Yes they can get depressed... Conor is living proof of that.

So how much 1on1 time do you and DH have with Taine?
Aside from daycare are there any other changes in his routine? How old is he?

I think you're entitled to worry!

What about iron deficiency? He sounds like me when I'm a little iron deficient.

But follow your gut and get him checked out

The first thing that crossed my mind was actually iron deficiency... I know blood tests for kids are icky but could also be worth asking about? Hopefully otherwise it is just the heat!

I have no useful suggestions but I wanted to let you know I don't think you're a drama queen at all.  You know your son better than anyone else and if he's not being himself then something's not right.

I hope you get answers and he comes right soon.

Taine is 2, nearly 3. For the past two weeks he has had HEAPS of one-on-one time with me and hubby. Jake has been continuing to go to daycare and because Taine was a bit out of sorts I figured he could come with me. We went shopping, visited the ducks, pools, heaps of stuff.

Iron deficiency you say...hmmmm. If the doctor suspects that, do you think they will just get us some meds for it, or will they insist on a blood test first? i would rather just pay for some iron tablets/med and try it first, before the needle...

Hey Lizzle, don't feel you are being a drama queen, we had some strange behaviour just before xmas which lead to a night in hosp for Anastasia and I - our 1st ed experience.  She had been off colour with what seemed to be a slight cold, runny nose etc for a few days, went out with DH sat 20th both girls went but tazy slept most of the drive - was fairly long but wasn't really herself for the day, dh treated them to md's for dinner she only ate the chips and finished off the drink and proceeded to bring that all back up.  Was very sleepy & lethargic, a little hot but nothing to worry about.  Went to bed without a problem n seemed fine the next day was only eating small amounts but drinking well, still tired & lethargic but ok.  Came to early hours Mon am she woke crying, not happy wanted a drink of milk, no problem went to move her in bed & started crying in pain said her leg was sore ?? she settled down had drink, went back to sleep and slept in till bout9.30am in our, bed.  When she woke she didn't want to walk, 'needed' to be carried to lounge where she stayed for the day almost apart from me taking her to the toilet etc didnt want to do anything.  She did walk in the arvo, I had given her some panadol as she was a bit warm & said to dh if she is the same the next day I would take her to dr's - not knowing how much she was "putting on" dh took her out with him and he is a bit hard on the girls & made her walk or she had to stay where she was etc so she did the panadol must have helped with the pain.  come tues & she was still complaining of sore leg so got appt earliest was 4pm, didn't give her panadol during the day as didn't want to mask any problem while at dr, she was walking/limping around and bum shuffling to get around but was more herself than the day before.  Got to dr who was a bit concerned, checked range of movement in knee & hip, temp was up & the area around her hip was 'warm' she was thinking septic arthritis so of course got me really worried thinking I had been so bad leaving her a day before bringing her in, dr rang thru to pead assesment ward to see if they would see her & was told to go to ed with letter, we would still have to wait but hopefully wouldn't be as long. Got thru to childrens accute assesment ward bout 5pm that arvo & there we stayed till just after lunch xmas eve after having blood tests done that arvo, x-rays in the morning after dr's rounds, they are still not sure what caused the prob but were satisfied there was no bone infection as she seemed to be getting better just on panadol - if she hadn't been moving better we would have prob been in there till xmas day after having mri done which they give GA to children.  Dont be worried about worring too much, they reassured me it was the right thing to bring her in to be checked because they "can't communicate" what the problem is and they were more than happy to have her there where they could watch and asses how she was doing.  Do what you feel is right and as the others have said you know your boy and how he 'normally' is.  Good luck, hope Taine feels better soon.
