    Posted: 29 February 2012 at 9:29pm
Hi, I am 27 years old and my husband and I are seriously ready to start a family. However, I have had panic attacks and severe anxiety since I was 14 years old. I am on Loxamine 40mg and Clonazepam 0.5mg and I don't know if I am allowed to be on these while pregnant. I could come off the Clonazepam but I'm not sure if I could cope without Loxamine.

Has anyone been pregnant and been on this medication? I would never forgive myself if I became pregnant and then something was wrong with the baby as a result of me taking medication.

Also has anyone else had panic attacks and anxiety and then got pregnant? If so how did you deal with your anxiety while you were pregnant and was it better or worse than normal?

I am very scared but desperately want to be a mum.

Thanks.

I don't know the answer to your questions but just wanted to welcome you to the forums! I just did a quick search and came up with this post: http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=37868&PN=61
You could try asking your doctor? They might be able to switch you onto a pregnancy-safe option?
Are you on the pill or anything as well?

No I'm not on the pill. Just have these awful panic attacks (usually health related) and I know pregnancy will probably be a pretty hard thing for me to go through and I guess I was jsut looking for reassurance that someone on here has been through the same thing.

Thank you for welcoming me though!

I know my sister was on anti-d medications throughout her pregnancy.

Your GP should be able to tell you what you can and can't take and if you need to come off a drug s/he should be able to set up a plan to help you.

Best of luck to you.

I didn't find it scary, but the first pregnancy was quite consuming and every little niggle was cause for a bit of worry or celebration. (Your body goes through a lot of changes and all the strange feelings are pretty normal). 2nd time around it's a bit different, I'm too busy to think about my pregnancy all the time.

Do you have a strong support system in place wantsababy? Hubby, a mum and dad or close friends near by?

I can't be of much help re: the medication, but when I was UTD with DD I found just finding out as much as I could (reading books/magazines/etc) was really helpful(just understanding why things wre happening so I didn't freak out!)

Such as, I started getting blood noses, got a bit scared but read somewhere that your have more blood circulating in your body and so sometimes vesles can burst and it was normal..
Also having a really supportive network of people and I had a brilliant midwife who didn't make me feel lame for asking stupid questions!

I think it's a stressful time for anyone, I mean, you are in charge of a tiny life!! But the pros far outweigh the cons and sometimes I just had to remember 'this too shall pass!'..

Although I will say, with anything anyone tells you and with anything you read, take any informtaion with a grain of salt.. try not to listen to anyones 'horror stories' or antyhing, in my opinion they do more harm than good. Its good to set up a plan in case things go downhill so you can deal with thme easier, but its not healthy to dwell on it! Hope you can talk to a Dr soon, they will probly have the best advice :)

All the best!

Well I went to the gynaecologist/obstetrician that did my LLETZ procedure and D&C in December (due to an abnormal smear) yesterday and he said that my cervix is all healed - yay! On the other hand that doesn't explain why I am still getting pinkish or reddish or brownish discharge inbetween periods (sorry TMI). He said it can happen but the thing is I never had it before I had the operation so I am trying not to go into full panic mode about this...

I asked him about my medication and he said I would be fine to stay on it. He has helped many women with pregnancies that have been on this medication and their babies were fine. The way these drugs are tested there is no way to know if it is the drug that is causing the problems. He didn't seem to have any reservations about me being on Loxamine throughout a pregnancy and just said when it came time to give birth he would give me an epidural so I didn't freak out with the pain.

So for now I just have to hope this intermittent bleeding stops. If not I will be going back for another check up. Then it is another colposcopy in June to check the abnormal cells haven't grown back and then hopefully some baby making!

I am quite scared that I won't be able to cope with a baby but I am guessing there are heaps of women out there that think like that right?

Thanks to you all :)

Hi wantsababy,

I know exactly how you feel. I got severe anxiety in my late twenties and developed a pregnancy phobia. I then had an unexpected pregnancy and miscarriage late last year that forced me to confront my pregnancy fear. I have found the best thing you can do is keep talking about it and surround yourself with support. Find out as much info as you can stay away from the horror stories like someone mentioned above. Try and stay focused on the bigger picture - that you want a family and all the positive things that will come with that, rather than on the pregnancy itself. Anxiety and pregnancy is REALLY common and while it's a yucky thing to have it's not dangerous to your baby. I tend to think of it like this - I get anxiety and panic attacks now, I might as well be pregnant and get them and have a baby at the end of it!

You will be fine and once your health issues are sorted out you will feel a million times better.

Thank you so much lilybaby. Im very sorry to hear bout your miscarriage last year. I feel like all i think about at the moment is babies and i just want to be a mum!
It is definitely good to know that panic attacks cant harm a baby. Hav u thought about trying for another baby? It is so great on here to be able to talk to other people in the same position and to get reassurance and support!

I'm the same too - just want to hurry up and be a mum!

We've been trying for 6 months with no luck. The longer we've been trying for the less anxious I've become because I just want to hurry up and get on with things! I've also learnt a lot about my body by tracking and looking for symptoms etc which has helped to alleviate my anxiety. Sharing the process with others going through the same thing is such a great help too.

haha just realised I called you lilybaby instead of lilycat! Oh I so hope that you get pregnant soon. I think I am a bit the same, just thinking about it all the time and wanting it so much that I'm not feeling as anxious as I was (not to say that if we eventually get pregnant that I won't be scared!). I hope you are doing well and keep on trying!

wantsababy - as the others have said lots of women have pregnancies whislt on anti-d meds - the anti-anxiety ones (ending in pam) are a little different - i am prone to panic attacks, was pretty good until 25weeks and then had horrid ones (they put me on some drugs temporarily until it settled down) - i had to be off the meds by 30 weeks which I was, my daughter is a very chilled out bubba and thankfully my panic attacks don't appear to have returned, think all those additional hormones have flicked a switch in my brain which has calmed it down somewhat - hope the same happens to you!

Thanks choco69. So you think I would be OK on my anti-depressants for anxiety? The obstetrician seems to think they are OK. I am currently on 0.5mg of Clonazepam but could cope with coming off that I think. My GP seems to think that pregnancy can help you feel calmer, I am glad to hear it worked for you, your little girl looks beautiful. I just hope one day that dream comes true for me.
