For those who have had C-sections, how did your recovery go? How long before you were able to do certain things like bathe, have sex, walk normally, begin other physical activities and so on? Any advice, words of wisdon, warnings?

Recovery for me was awesome. Home after the birth within 3 days, able to get around, shower etc as soon as I was home, was having sex within 2 weeks, driving after 11 days. My main advice is to take all pain relief on offer those first few days, don't let them try and 'wean' you off too soon, better to control the pain than to try and resolve it once it's taken hold.

I was walking around the morning after the c-section (had it at 9pm), showered that morning, walking normally that day, started the exercises given by the physio as soon as I could. I started driving about 3 weeks after the c-section but my husband was home so didn't need to before that. I had a friend who couldn't drive for bout 5-6 weeks after but not sure why.
Take all the pain relief you can, and don't be afraid to request it, and get a prescription on discharge. They forgot to give me the morphine when they did the spinal and I had to argue to keep the PCA for as long as the anaethesist wanted me to. The midwives (and nurses) can be very stingy with pain relief so if you want say you are in more pain than you think you are in and don't wait till are already sore to request it.

ETA: Recovery is very different for different people, so don't push yourself too much or expect it to be like other people's. A friend of mine who was a nurse in the maternity ward was actually shocked to see me up and about the evening after the c-section and said most women aren't as mobile. Had another friend who had a c-section and she struggled a lot with her recovery in terms of what she could do.

I had a good experience with my CS.  It was an emergency one due to fetal distress.  That said, it wasn't a rush job.  I was carted off to theatre and had my baby probably like an elective.

The wound took a wee while to heal and sometimes was itchy and/or numb around the incision.  It didn't get infected and didn't bother me too much - except for coughing and sneezing in the early days.  The incision is below the pubic line and the scar is now faded to white.  The bleeding after the CS lasted for 8 weeks.  Even though they supposedly give you a good 'clean out' I reckon I bled about the same as a vaginal birth afterward.

I was able to drive 10 days afterward - probably not recommended, but I had cabin fever and needed to get out of the house.

For pain relief, all I needed was panadol for the time I was in hospital (4-5 days).  I could have got away with not having any, but the nurses kept offering it.

Breastfeeding was normal.  Getting in and out of bed, or rolling over was a bit of a mission, but the stomach muscles soon came back.

Mine was a very rushed emergency one. I took lots of pain relief in the first 24 hours, especially in the first 12 when in ICU. I wasn't allowed out of bed until about 36 hours after it all. I started feeling heaps better between 2-4 weeks and by 6 weeks felt really good. I didn't drive until 6 weeks. I only occasionally have tender spots now.

For my most recent elective at 40wks,
Into hospital maternity ward meet by MW at 7.45am, mucked around waiting for theatre to call, couldnt wipe smile off my dial!
Into theatre 8.45, Spinal in 8.50am, baby in my arms 8.56am AWESOME!!!Skin to skin tried to BF baby wouldnt latch so well
Back to ward 9.45am BF again
They sat me up a bit to BF was far better, FELT LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS with gorgeous wee babe in arms
After tea the ward MW helped me to stand up take a few paces (catheter still attached) felt really good, sat back down slept a little was still adrenalin from the birth and couldnt stop looking at my gorgeous baby, DH stayed with me till 12noon when he went to get our other children and brought them back
Had visitors (nana's around 2pm) friends 4-5pm DH again after tea. Morphine is great stuff!

Next morning they were a bit busy popped in a few times saying they were coming back to remove catheter so I could have a shower etc, didnt end up having a shower till around 1130am, MW had to assist to wash my legs as I didnt feel well to bend/reach under my no deflated tummy

I prefer to stay in hosp a while to ensure I dont rip my stitches as a friend left at 2 days and had major probs. I put my foot down and stayed 6 nights. Just so I could heal/rest/bond with baby

I drove also around 11days

I bled for alot longer with this c/s till 6wks, with Vb it was 8wks and my other c/s (was in active labour but planned) only bled for 1 week.

Does this helP?

Different for everyone, and it can have a lot to do with how well you heal generally and how active/ fit you are.

I had great trouble walking my last few weeks of pregnancy and had just seen the pregnancy physios when my daughter came early.

Take all the pain relief you can get. Be firm with midwives removing things like PCAs before you think you are ready. Ask to speak with the doctor or anaethetist!   Everyone needs a different amount of pain relief and it works better if it is given regularly rather than when just in pain.

It took me nearly six weeks to drive the car and twelve weeks before I felt 'healed.' It may not hurt to do something at the time - but might hurt later. I did a stack of dishes on my second day home - and an hour later was in a bad way!

I got up for a walk the morning after my C-section, and talk frequent little walks during the day. I was able to shower by myself the next morning.

My c-section was an emergency one performed when the baby got stuck after a full day of labouring. But by that time, even though I was a little disappointed, I was mainly just excited to meet my baby :)

I think it was about 24hrs before I was up and walking around and going to toilet etc. I was given good pain killers, Tramadol and Ibuprofen, and was also given a script when I left hospital for a large supply (so I could decide how much and how often). Once I was able to get up and move around I was eager to get home and was going to be allowed after three days but unfortunately my baby had jaundice and so had to be in the light bed for a couple days.

I unfortunately got a post op infection :( Which landed me in ED a few days later in intense pain and I was admitted and put on IV antibiotics. I was home again a couple days later. (post op infection sadly led to decreased milk supply landing us in hospital again the next day because my baby became malnourished and had to be tube fed - but after a few days we got that all sorted and I was put on Domperidone which increased my milk supply back to normal).

My scar healed up pretty good. Was a bit tender and itchy but other than that. I was driving after 4 weeks. And going for walks to BUT take it slow, its amazing how just a couple hundred metres tires you out after a c-section.

All in all it probably took me about 6 weeks to feel normal again, but I had a far from normal recovery! I'm sure without all the complications I probably would have been feeling good a lot sooner.

It depends how you get there. I've had 2.
One emergency after a long story and then to top it off I reacted to a drug and "lost" a day.
One an elective (because problem with #1 likely to repeat), calm affair. But that time I reacted tot he amount of saline they pump into you.
That being said, about a week to feel ok.
Longer to lifting and stuff.

i think my recovery was slow.
i had quite alot of pain when i got home as they forgot to give me codiene and i would wake up at night unable to move from the pain.
that lasted a couple of days
i think it was slower as i really didnt want it but if ur prepared then might be easier.
we had sex about 3weeks after just took it real slow n stuff but was still quite painful.
i didnt do any house work or cooking for about 6weeks after DF done it all as i found it quite hard. but once i started going for litle walks each day i found it alg.

Oh I wish they would scan you when you are in labour to check if cord is around neck, I have heard so many tragic stories esp when labour is long/slow to progress etc. My DD1's cord was around her neck twice (had to be cut when only her head was out and body still inside me)
we were very lucky to have her. If they had scanned me it would of been straight for c/s which would have been far better in the long run for me and her both. no2 & no3 were c/s and way better than my vb recovery

I had an emergency c section after a very long and traumatic birth. Recovery took a little longer.
I agree with the others that you need to keep on top of the pain instead of trying to fix it.

In regard to the driving you may feel fine but if you had to break quickly you can really do some damage thats why they recommend not driving for 6 weeks that and most insurance companies will not insure you for 6 weeks as part of their policy so you need to be careful about that.

Did you actually ring your insurance MissJen?

I rung my insurance and they said I was covered. I guess it depends on your policy?

I had an emergency c-section nearly 3 weeks ago due to no progress after 20 hours of contractions.

The spinal block wore off before they got the baby out and so I was pumped full of drugs while they stitched me back up. This is very rare, and it was due to my body metabolising the spinal block to fast.

I had her at 10.30pm, was on the ward by 1.30am and showered by midday the next day. Walking around the next day was painful but within a few days it was ok. Take regular pain relief, not just when it hurts. I did that (because I had a horrible nurse) and sure paid the price of it.
Make sure your hospital bed is as low to the ground as it can go to make getting in and out easier and if you can sleep with the baby on you to eliminate so many up and downs during the night.

I still have bad days now if I do too much where Im in alot of pain. But you learn how much your body can handle pretty quickly.

I dont have to drive as I have someone home with me and will do for another 2 weeks and by then I think I will be up to driving.

Each recovery is different and you have to let your body lead the way. Everyone heals and recovers at different paces.

Good luck :)

My insurance is fine im completely covered. Just warning others out there that they may not. But despite the insurance thing you prob dont want to rip you r stomach open from the inside out and if you knowingly drive after major surgery and something happens insurance companies can use that against you whether you are covered or not

Of course major damage can happen in a car accident, but it can also happen as a passenger in the car too, so I think if you are prepared to go as a passenger post c/s whats the difference if you are the driver. Im my case I just drove myself, took the risk. Each to their own decision of course.
