DS1's preschool has sent a letter home asking for feedback on a Facebook page they propose to set up. They are consulting with parents before going live.

The purpose of the page appears to be primarily as another method of communication with parents (and, I would assume, prospective parents).

They say that they will:
- show milestones and achievements of the preschool
- link users to useful sites/articles
- advertise local events that users might be interested in
- promote their holiday programmes
- link families
- advertise vacancies

More importantly, to address privacy concerns, they have said that they will NOT:
- post any photos or names of children, teachers or parents
- all posts to the site will go through an authorisation process before being published
- posts regarding excursions will be in the past tense (ie "we went to the zoo on Tuesday" rather than "we are going to the zoo on Tuesday"
- access to the page will be restricted to NZ FB users only

I am really glad they are consulting as internet privacy is very important to me. To me it seems that their plan seems fine and would address my concerns but I know there are ladies on here who are way more tech-savvy than me - what do you think??

Sounds like they have really done their homework to me as they seem to be very conscious of obvious risks with social networking sites.

I personally can't see any problem with it except I guess you would expect them to have it so only a couple of specified admin people can post stuff on the page like photos etc and that any communication people try and put on has to be approved by them first.

Hope that makes sense :/

Unfourtuneatly social networking sites are "the way of the future" and if businesses, schools and even play centres want to continue to reach out to parents and communities they will need to move with the times or the will find it hard to get new clients\members etc and maybe even maintain the ones the ones they have got.

10 years ago (aybe a bit more) email wasn't common place. Now it is.

one of the mums at kindy set up a facebook page for the parents of the kindy...it does come in handy especially for events happening at the kindy. or during holidays if parents want to catch up

one of the rules is no photos of children that are not your own.

it is also a closed group so only people on that FB page can see what is written on there

My daughters kindy has a fb page, nothing stupid about it at all. Its not as if its for the kids to use lol!

If DD's preschool decided to do this I wouldn't have a problem with it, as such ... they already have a website and post photos to it, with our permission.

However - if it truly is for communication with parents - then I think it should be a 'closed' group. Easy enough for them to approve new members - just check them off against the school roll. I would be much more likely to enter discussions in a closed group than a public group. If they are not open to that idea then they must be looking at Facebook more as marketing tool.

A friend of DH is irate that his children's school is doing this. Some people strongly object to having photos of their children on the internet.

Get them to make a FB page that's a private group that only parents and caregivers of kiddies at the preschool can join. Ours has Twitter.

Our playcentre has a facebook page - it is closed and no photos go on there. It's mainly used to communicate about session times, duty, meetings, posting documents we all need to see, etc. But we also have an email list as well.

Even if it's a closed page, if a photo gets posted there FB has rights to it so personally, I'd be pretty picky about what photos get posted.
