Hey I posted in the weight loss section too, but thought I would try my luck here as well.

Has anyone been/is on weight loss pills prescribed by your doc? I'm going to my doc on wed to talk about going on them as I really need a kick start. I'm wanting something short term to get me motivated.

Any comments welcome.

thanks

I was on Duromine for a few months. I only ever took them every other day instead of every morning as precribed. Still lost heaps of weight. They kept me wired. Stay busy or you will just be very figity. They really do stop you eating mindlessly though. I could bearly manage more then a cracker or so at a time on the days I had them. You get hungry and 5 minutes later the urge to eat has passed.

They are expensive about $80 a month - another reason I only took them every other day. Don't tell your Dr just go back when you should have otherwise run out. I don't think he would have put me on them if he thought I wasn't going to take them as directed.

Be mindful that they do mess with your moods. Sometimes I would be tearful and sometimes I would get into a rage over things that might not make me SO mad otherwise. If you are at least aware of it you won't take it out on the people around you as much.

My Dr gave me duromine after having reductal years ago and they did nothing for me. I managed to keep the weight off until several months after prgnancy when I became as heavy as I was at full term

Your doctor might not prescribe these. It depends on the individual Dr's attitude I think. Some Dr are totally against any type of drug like this

Thanks so much for replying BabyRixon. I have posted on so many forums about this topic, but no ones wanting to get back to me. I have also done some research on google, trying to weigh up the pros and cons and I still have so many questions.

My DH is very weary of them and not keen for me to go on them. But I am truely desperate. I am 175cm tall and weighing 123kg. So my BMI is 40.2 and it's suppose to be 30. It's effecting my body in so many ways (very irregular periods ect). I can truely say I'm not looking for a quick fix (as I would only want them for 12 weeks MAX), and that it's gotten to a point of being dangerous for me being this obese. I wanted something to help me to change my eating habits and to give me a kick start with the weight.

Did you have any side effects? Did it stop you from sleeping? Did it do anything to your sex drive? And I have heard it isn't good for the elasticity in your skin - so can make it saggy.

thanks again :)

I cant believe that doctors still prescribe Duromine. Its just legal speed FFS! My SIL got some from her doc too and she gave me some to try. I only took one, that was more than enough for me. I felt wired, talked ninety to the dozens, even to strangers on the phone, and didnt eat hardly anything in the day. I gave the rest back to my SIL. I didnt feel normal at all the whole day it was in my system lol! My mother was prescribed them once year ago too - and i mean Years!!

IMO if you want a kick start then why not try Weight Watchers or Jenny or one of the many other diet programs out there. I did the WW 2 week free online trial they had when i started out. I just used them for the 2 weeks to get a handle on portion sizes and took it from there. Have a look round and see if you can find a free trial or reduced price one to help get you started if you need something.

Thanks Bizzy for your comment. I appreciate honesty and am wanting to know what it's like from both sides.

Here's a bit of my history and why I'm considering duromine.

I am pre diabetic, have fatty liver disease and I have problems with my blood sugars (my doctor said my insulin deposits don't work properly - So i get extreme lows and highs with energy. To the point, where I'm 'low in energy', I'll feel sick to the stomach and get dizzy and heachachey. Eating something immediately helps.)

I tried weight watchers and successfully lost 10kg in 13 weeks (this was 5 years ago). I put it back on through the years. This worked really well for me.

It wouldn't work now as the foods (although they promote fruit and vege) are not designed for low GI eaters. I am on a diet of low GI (so eating wholegrain foods, wheat foods ect) and it works great for my heachaches and blood sugars). But would not work now.

The reason I was looking into duromine was because my weight is worrying me something fierce. I have started to have other problems like irregular periods and skin problems due to my weight. I am considering the effects of my weight (diabetes, heart problems ect) where it is compared to the drug helping me kick start. I can truly say I'm not looking or a quick fix. I'm not trying to be lazy and find a way out. I'm looking into it cause I need some motivation to help me get started. I have already started eating healthy and will start exercising asap. I also only want to be on it for no more then 2 months and I have read up about taking a tablet once every 2 days - which is still effective, but you don't get the full brunt of it.

If you already eat healthy then i suggest you wait a couple of weeks and see what happens from that. You may be very surprised what a good diet can do and once you see the scales move down it is a great motivations.   And seriously the only exercise you need to start with is walking. Thats what got me started... i was walking the MIL's dog a couple of times a week and i stopped eating bread. Its not exercise that will help with weight loss but what you eat. Dont eat after dinner and make all snacks palm size. I think that because Duromine makes you not hungry it wouldnt work for you and what you need. Have you spoken to WW or checked their website as i am pretty sure a low GI diet is something they would work with. After all not everybody enjoys the same foods.   Have you spoken to your doctor as he may not recommend Duromine anyway or he may have something else in mind as Duromine is not the only weight loss tablet out there.

Good luck with your journey!

I took Duromine, years ago, (when I weighed less than I do now, so not sure why I was prescribed it, and the side effects were pretty awful, I had insomnia and palpatations. I definately wouldn't do it again. Good luck, its hard but you will get there.
And totally, WW fully support wholegrain foods and fruit and vegetables, the system is quite different now and works a lot more with what you can eat and puts a massive emphasis on filling and healthy foods.

Tangerine I know where you are coming from. I have yo-yo dieted for yrs & done pills, shakes, & many different diets & the only thing that worked for me was portion control & food choices.

Once you have control over how much you are eating then the rest falls into place. Add in exercise like walking & you have a cheap easy way to get fit, healthy & loose weight.

Also watch what foods you eat & when you eat & try & have a big glass of water first as a lot of times when we think we are hungry we are really just thirsty instead.

I stopped diet pills when I saw a doco yrs ago on how many died as the diet pills damaged the heart valves so that was enough for me to never use them again, want to be slim but not die getting there.

We have a couple of weight loss groups on here you can join if you want to...great for support

Also have you done a food diary & worked out how many cals you are eating? you may be surprised/shocked.
You could use http://www.myfitnesspal.com its free & easy to use.

Diet pills are good for suppressing the appetite & they get you buzzy/fidgety which will burn cals, but it does not train you to eat right & keep your body strong & functioning.

My favourite exercise is walking, I feel so great afterwards. I used to put the kids in the pram & walk for hrs & it does not take long to get your fitness leave up & increases your energy.

So eat more often but small & healthy, drink plenty of water & go walking...this is my diet & it has worked in the past & will work for me this time also.

Or maybe spend your money on a nutritionist to help set a diet that works for what you want (low GI) and will help with weight loss then you will get what your body needs in a safer way
