Topic: Neocate Formula Posted: 17 November 2008 at 10:39am |
My partner and i are finally having our first day/night away from our beautiful baby boy after a year. But I've been having trouble expressing milk for him (He's gonna stay with Nanny and Grandad).
Because of our families long history of severe dairy and soy allergies i have completely cut these products out of my diet and breastfed him.
So we went to the doctor about this dairy and soy free formula that we heard of Neocate. We got the prescription but a 400g tin of Neocate is $107.00!
So my questions are: Has anyone tried this with their babies? Has it been ok? Has anyone bought it online? Any advice about Neocate?
Thanks heaps. :)

Try posting in the allergy section. Someone there might be able to help you out.
If they are on it full-time, then with a special authority form from specialist, once approved by the medicine funding people( sorry cant think of the proper name), you can then get it on presciption for around $7 a tin.
There is also Pepti-junior. It is a bit cheaper cos the proteins in the neocate and even more broken down than the are in the pepti jr, but not sure how much without the special authority. Babies with dairy allergy can be fine on it, but if they have had a severe anaphlyaxis they all go onto Neocate. Our sepcialist got us to try the pepti jr first, and Isla was great on it.

You couls also ph 0800 neocate, and speak to them. They can probably send u a sample tin, or advise u what else u could do. You normally have to leave aa message cos they only have 2 dietcians answering the calls, but they always ring u back and have tonnes of great info and advise.

Hi there, if you only saw your gp you will be getting charged full price for it as they aren't able to get the special authority number to get it subsidised. If you want it subsidised then you have to see a paed. My son is on neocate and it took a little while for him to drink it, we had to mix it with the other formula until he got use to the taste and I can imagine it would be the same changing from breast to it. It tastes like raw potato so I wasn't surprised that he rejected it at first.

Are you looking to wean from breast to Neocate? If you are, you'll need to see a Paediatrician first, and wait for that charming paperwork for your special authority # if it's approved. If not, could you try rice milk since it's only for one night and he's a year already? It's not recommended as a milk substitute for babies because it's too lean in nutrients, but for one night I wouldn't see the harm. That is, if he'll take it, which it'd pay to check a few times before you go away. But you'd certainly need to check that he'd take the Neocate too... and seems like most babies take a little time to adjust to it's erm, unique flavour.

My daughter went onto neocate a couple of months ago. When I went from bfing to ordinary formula it became apparent that she had allergies. She was better on lactose-free formula, but still not great.
I'd recommend getting seen by a specialist and getting your son properly tested, so that you're not restricting his diet unnecessarily IYKWIM. If the specialist thinks he has a dairy allergy he can apply for a SA number which will reduce the cost to about the same as normal formula.
Took awhile to get Eva to take it, and like others we had to mix it with her old formula first. It's been the best thing ever though and she is much happier on it.

I wouldn't use it without seeing a peaditrician first. There is another formula called Pepti-Junior which you should try first.
Both Pepti-Junior and Neocate can be bought for $4.00 a tin with a special health authority number.

My daugher is diagnosed as dairy intollerant (not anaphylactic) and I put her on goats formula and now she is on goats milk (long life). She is thriving and has no more eczema or allergy issues relating to dairy ingestion. Goats milk could be an option for you ... ?
Formula tin approx $37 from supermarket
Long Life approx $3.50 from supermarket
