    Posted: 28 February 2009 at 7:12pm
My 13 day old boy is very unsettled during the day at the moment (slept for about half an hour at the most today ) but at night has a great long sleep of 6 or 7 hours. This long sleep usually starts at between 7 and 9pm, so he wakes around 2-3am.

Question is - I was thinking if I wake him for a feed around 10.30pm then he might have his long sleep from 11 which would obviously be bliss for me (no middle of the night feed!) Would this work? Or will I just end up with a grumpy baby and more short sleeps rather than one long one? And if I do do it, would it be better to leave him sleepy and feed him, or to really try to wake him up properly?

Btw - I know it's quite long for a newborn to sleep for but my midwife seems to think it's fine, he's putting on weight like it's going out of fashion and having lots of wet/dirty nappies so no problems there.

TIA

I found with Isabelle it didnt make a difference .. she still woke at 3am whether I woke her, dream fed her or left her.

I would have loved her to go down later too .. but a big sleep is better than them having none

Yep, makes no difference with James either. He loves to wake around 3am and be up for 2 hours!!!!  I am not impressed with this but it doesnt matter what I try.  I am just waiting till he outgrows it.  My only advice (and it is advice that I personally wouldnt follow) is for you to go to bed at 7pm too.  But like I said, I wouldnt want to do that.

I dont think the "dreamfeed" idea works till they are a bit older.

Oh, and watch out!  we have all found the 3week mark is hell!

I found the late feed made no difference for Jody either. However she did just decide one night that she didn't need the 3am(ish) feed and sleeping is much more fun. She has been sleeping through since about 6(?) weeks.
I found there was no point trying to adjust her sleeping either, nothing worked for us, so I just let her call the shots

From what I've read, DF often works best about the 3 month mark. If you do it, do it for at least 5 nights to see if it's effective. But if the one waking a night is working, then I don't know if you want to risk messing with it at this point!

Didn't make a difference with either of mine, they would both wake at the same time regardless of a dream feed or not. Figured there was no point.

Well a dreamfeed works for us, she used to wake bout 2-3am then one night i gave her a dreamfeed and she slept til 5am and know she will sleep from 7-8pm til 8am with a 10.30pm dreamfeed. I say give it a go and if it doesnt work then keep doing wat ur doing, and a dreamfeed works for some but not others. Good luck and he will settle but remeber hes only 14 days old.

Nzpiper, you said the 3-week mark is hell... do you mean its a growth spurt time? My little one is feeding every 3-4 hours still (at night too), is this likely to change very shortly?

There is growth spurt, wind, reflux.....changes in patterns....honestly it's all a blur!

We found dream feeding has not worked yet, that 2.30 am mark is like ground hog day!
