My little Ben is now 2.5 weeks old and his crying has increased dramatically in the last few days.

We work on 3 hour cycles (ie feed, awake for an hour then sleep.. repeat 3 hours after first feed)

We are now watching for tired signs and putting him to bed earlier however the tears are still there.

Tears when we put him to bed, tears during his sleep period, tears after feeding, tears when he wakes in the middle of the night.

Not sure what we are doing wrong here or if this is just normal...

Help ladies please.

Relax. Let him sleep for as long as he wants. Feed him whenever he wakes up. Make sure you wind him. Put him to bed when you see tired signs or if none, at the end of 1 hour of waking. It's normal for him to cry a LOT at this age, he may be extra hungry as he is due for a growth spurt. You're doing a great job, it's hard work but it gets easier.

its TOTALLY normal and it does get easier.

i totally agree with Flutterby, do what you can to get him to sleep, I really think when they are that little they just need the closeness, most nights when Finley was that little we tried to put him to bed, he would not settle, so I would go to bed and he would fall asleep with me, then we'd transfer him to his bed at about 11pm.

Oh and I miss the snuggly sleeps.

try just getting into bed with you and him, and maybe a dummy and get some rest the two of you.

He has probably just discovered he has lungs, its all part of the development.

and finally CONGRATS, he looks super cute.

We were the same we fed every 3 hours without fail we have always stuck to a very strict routine that has worked wonders for us all the way through. But at this age I wouldn't worry about keeping him up for an hour at that age all they do is sleep and eat and thats totally normal.

Congrats too he is beautiful

Sounds just like my DD she was really settled and quiet for the first 2 weeks and then it was like she woke up and found her lungs, it sure was a shock!!! I just did whatever it took to settle her which seemed to change from hour to hour, and then got her into a routine once I got to know her a little better. One thing that really worked for us was cradling her in our arms and bouncing on a swiss ball, she LOVED it. White noise also helped when she was asleep at night (just a radio on static or a white noise CD) It definitely does get easier and the crying gets less. An hour awake time is maybe too much, I learnt that the hard way but struggled to notice the tired signs especially when I was so tired myself.

All the best and what a little cutie!!!

What they said
Also, don't feel bad for getting him up for cuddles etc when he is upset. He is too young to form habits and sometimes he just needs to be close to you or his dad.
Tears are normal, it is his only form of communication now. What REALLY helped DH and I cope during this stage was to agree that if the crying was getting to one of us, even just a little bit we could hand bubba over to the other one with no judgement just for a break. It works really well as we don't really get a chance to get stressed.
Routines work fantastically for some babies, not so well for others. Personally I chose to let Jody lead the way and trusted my instincts, she has made her own routine and it works very well.
Also (I'm nearly done, honest!), if you are breastfeeding make sure you are eating LOTS, don't worry about weight gain, it all goes to your milk. My mw said a breastfeeding mumma needs 3 times as many kjs than normal. I really noticed if I hadn't eaten enough in the early days Jody would be very upset.

And yes, big fat CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Ben is so so cute!

I agree with the rest. The 3 hour routine is great and you can probably expect to start using that when is 6 to 8 weeks old but for now just relax and get to know your baby. Watch your son for his hunger and tired signs and let him direct his routine, it will probably naturally start to form a 3 hour cycle anyway.
