I have been trying for 18 months now and am wondering what the story would be for ivf. I read on the FA website that you need 65 points and for that would need to be trying for 5 years if have unexplained infertility which is our problem....what the heck does that mean? Does being over 30 make more points! I can't wait five years trying before I get to try that.

Their scoring system is based on a number of things including age, BMI, your fertility issue(s), health (I think) eg. smoker (ineligible from memory) ... I can't remember the rest! I think you actually get more points the younger you are in conjunction with a fertility issue of course). There are a lot of factors in play though with the points system.

At the time we first saw FA we had been trying for about 3 years I think and initial tests showed that we had unexplained infertility, and we were sent away for another couple of years. Further tests debunked that though (it turns out that the initial semen analysis we had done was too vague, and one carried out by FA showed male infertility), so we went on the waiting list.

Who diagnosed (for want of a better word) your unexplained infertility? Were you dealing with FA?

Also, that is through the public system that you may potentially have to wait. The way Iooked at it was that even if it took me a year to save for a public cycle, that was still half the time we were sent away for (2 years) - if we got pregnant in the meantime, well, we had that money as savings in the bank!

If they want to make you wait years for IVF and you are over 30, I strongly suggest that after you have pushed your cause with the fert. clinic, that you bite the bullet and go private (pay the money and do the IVF). Maybe you can still remain on the waiting list for publically funded IVF as well - as a back up in case it doesnt work the first (paid) time...?
All the best.

I suggest you go and see a specialist asap and get them to do their basic tests (hormones for you, sperm analysis for DH). We went to the GP after 7 months trying and then she referred us to FA in Wellington 3 months later when the basic tests she ordered found nothing of concern.
FA did a whole bunch of other tests to rule out other problems (HSG to test my tubes, post-coital test to check my "fluids") and then put me on clomid for 6 months. No luck there. We wanted to then go straight to IVF but specialist convinced us to do IUI first. We are both 30, DH's sperm is "very normal" and I am definitely ovulating, tho my progesterone is on the low side of normal. Because of this, you need to find other ways to get points for public funding. Failed IUIs can count as points. We did two IUIs ($1500 a pop) and then specialist referred us for publically funded IVF. There is a 6 month waiting period in Wellington (much better than the 2 years ginger referred to in Auckland!) so we are down for Sept of this year. So by the time that comes around we will have been trying for 2 1/2 years. In the meantime we are privately funding a cycle ourselves because we couldn't wait.

My advice would be to get an appt with a specialist asap (either ring them yourselves or get your GP to refer you). You need to be in their system to be assessed for IVF.

Thanks for the replies..have been to a specialist already thank goodness -however we are in Aussie so not sure how that will affect things if we move home in between!
I had an operation for suspected polyp which didn't exist and then some weirdo thing holding my ovary back which should have only affected fertility by 5% (I totally didn't get the maths there as from what specialist said one ovary was not working quite right which to me suggests 50%). But everything else is AOK with both of us though have't done the post coital test yet :-) My cycles are super regular and pretty sure I ovulate every month!
My specialist is obsessed with PCOS which is why I am on the drugs metformin even though I don't have any signs of it at all.
So it seems super stink that just because we don't know what is wrong we have to find ways of getting points! grrr. How is unexplained infertility any better than actually knowing what is wrong?? (Other than don't have pain every month-sorry ladies who do)
