Yay a question I can answer. I was born at Thames hospital....okay and I have some more recent experience.
There is currently a birthing unit in the planning pipe line which will provide a birthing facility which will be separate from the hospital. But this is still in the very early stages ie still on paper but watch this space..
What they currently have??
I gave birth at Waikato Hospital stayed 3 nights and then transferred to Thames Hospital for 2 nights. I WISH I had transferred earlier. There were 22 women in the ward at Waikato and I was the only person at Thames for the two days I was there.... so I got one on one care... I needed help latching at 2am... BANG midwife there in 30 seconds.... They were FANTASTIC. The rooms were done up I would guess around 5 years ago. I had a massive 'single' bed and DH was allowed to stay. They offered a mattress or said that may DH's sleep in the bed which was nice. They had everything in the room you could think of including a couch and a TV.
The facilities for birthing there... well I can only tell you what I saw. There was a birthing pool there, a delivery room and 2 newish recovery rooms.... My understanding is that you can't have an epi or a c-section there. Our plan was to birth at a birthing unit but ended up in Waikato as I had to be induced.
I CANNOT speak highly enough of our experience at Thames.. but didn't actually "do the deed" there if you know what I mean. The staff at Waikato were great but just too busy. I wasn't given some medication for 24 hours at Waikato before someone noticed I had been missing out.
PS: The food was also great... well compared to the meals I had at Waikato.
I almost gave birth at thames but was transfered to waikato after 20hours due to complications.
The time I was there was awesome though. It was xmas day so no one else was there so i could wander up and down the halls.
