Just found out that I have to go back to hospital to have a camera shoved down my throat to check my stomach due to a long standing gastro problem.
Has anyone else had this done? They said they can sedate me but that means DH having to get the day off to drive me etc. Just wondering how it feels with just the numbing spray they can put in your throat. It will be alot easier if I can just have it done then drive myself home. I'm sure I can handle anything after going through child birth lol but the thought of it is grossing me out!!
My friend had this done and she said it was uncomfortable but ok. I don't know about the driving though do you have a friend or family who can take you instead of DH?
I was sedated when I had a gastroscopy, and I agree with Anthea, it's not too pleasant so being sedated is a good idea. The only part of it I remember is spitting up the tube at the end when they pulled it out, it felt like I was gagging on something. I don't remember being too uncomfy afterwards.

I too had the sedation. While you can't drive afterward I must admit, I went in first thing (was the only one on the list) and actually felt fine by about 11am/midday.
I would go for the sedation too. My Dad's had it done both ways and he def said sedation was better because he really struggled with the constant urge to gag with just the spray.
I was sedated both times. First time to diagnose coeliac disease and the second time a couple of years later to confirm that the gluten free diet was working. Michaela was 3mo the second time I had it and TBH I was pleased for the sleep lol (I even asked them to put me out for longer).
DH has had an endoscopy without the sedation and like Emz mentioned the gag reflex made it difficult.
I Had it done and i asked to be knocked out as i hate anything around my mouth and panick..........they said it wasnt a good idea and they would numb my throat and give me something that will make me drowzie and i wouldnt remember anything..............well ha to them.........i remember everything including giving doc a black eye (not intentianal) i tried to make myself relax and close my eyes............managed to get it down and swallowing is the worse.........then he told me to cough all the time to get it up and this took ages so this is when i panked i opened my eyes and i swang and got him...........they should have listened to me i have also had a tube down to pump my stomach to see what was wrong with me.........the guy made me feel comfortable and he did it in my room with mum and hubby there.......it went up my nose and down my throat and it was a smaller tube........my son had it down when he was 2mths so thought if he can do it so can i.......it wasnt that bad but glad it was over and i couldnt speak for a while after which i think hubby enjoyed
okay i am going to go against the grain as i have had a gastrophathy (sp) twice - once sedated and once on with the numbing spray - and if I had again - Numbing spray all the way. I hated the sedation more for after wards. Yes having the spray was rather uncomfortable and made my eyes water like made and gagging - yuck! But as soon as its out - FINE and carried on as normal. I did however take my mum with me the second time as not recomended to drive. but when the Dr came to talk to me afterwards i remembered everything, after the sedation i had my partner at the time with me and he couldn't remember half the things the dr had said. Mine was to check for Crohn disease (which I did have)
By the way once the camera is in your stomach you don't gag anymore - just uncomfortable the way you have to hold you neck and head while its still in there and you cant really swallow or anything.. oh but you can breathe LOL..
