I just came across these Reborn Dolls on TradeMe..

I'm not quite sure what to make of them.. Has anyone seen them before? What are they like? Some of them look so real!

I think they're amazing how lifelike they are, but the thing that freaks me out is how people are actually buying them to substitute as a real baby The 20/20 special (which has been on before) showed all the wacko's going to conventions to pick out babies that fit in their families etc! And the woman that created them keeps the ones she thinks looks like the babies she miscarried (poor woman had something like 13 or 14 miscarriages ). I think the people that use them as real babies (one took hers out to restaurants, parks etc to get attention) need serious help.

WOW Emz that is twisted..
Its like this whole other world, that I never knew existed!
Reading through some of the questions and comments on the TM auction, I got the impression that some people were buying them and treating them like real babies and taking them out for walks in a pram etc..
A lot of the dolls had bids, and they are not cheap!

The dolls are freaky but I always feel so sad for the people that buy them.

I watched the 20/20 and thought those people are seriously missing something. It was sad actually as they used them as real children!

Those dolls are so creapy! I feel very sad for those people who are using them as substitutes for real babies...mind you someone who is that unstable probably shouldn't have a real one.

I think they are freaky too but some people do actually just like getting them to collect, I know of heaps of people who have pocelain doll collections etc and these are a new aspect to this.

As an aside though: i must say it really angers me in some ways as the dolls they commonly use to make these are Berenguer dolls, which are absolutely lovely baby dolls for little girls if you get the largers ones (am not fond of the expressions ones, ick) Ayja has one and i have looked everywhere for others but they are usually snapped up very fast.   I got the one for ayja for her 1st birthday, was the last on the shelf, retailed for $30. I got home and looked on trade-me, and what do you know, people buy them and resell to doll makers and are getting up to $80 for them.   Sucks if you're just looking for a cute baby doll for your little girl.

The ones that use them for other reasons... they scare me.

I didn't watch 20/20 ...from above comments think it wouldn't have interested me much but along my travels I have come across the odd auction on TM for these reborn dolls and I must say that some of them have totally blown me away, so life-like and gorgeous. For me, if I was to win lotto I'd like to have a splurge and get one for myself, not because I want to nurture and treat it like a real baby - but I really admire the work that goes into them.

All other things aside, you've gotta admit some of them are absolutely gorgeous!

OMG these are weirdo....what is rather depressing is that I made a joke on the ttc forum that I should go buy a doll instead of trying for a baby and what do you know...people do that.

I don't get it tho, why are they called reborn?? Do people make these dolls or what? Kind of freaky, they just look like babies.....

I believe they are called reborn dolls because they are usually a child/baby reborn in the form of a doll...could be talking out a hole in my a$$ though

I agree that for those who choose to treat them like real/human babies ...it is rather sad to quite honest, well it's not my cup of tea iykwim. But I guess maybe its a way for some people to find closure?

Each to their own.

Sorry had to change my post to make sense bed time for me...

Gosh I know they aren't real, but I just followed that original link Kriss and boy I'm feeling clucky - how beautiful is wee Kyle! Honestly wouldn't have any qualms about having a doll like him in a gorgeous bassinette in my room, just for show. Don't care if anyone thinks im nuts in saying that, he [Kyle] truly is a piece of art and I have a soft spot for redheads

Buzzybee, I just had a look at Kyle, my goodness he looks so life-like! The close ups of his head are amazing, I don't think he has that spotty dolls-hair at all! There must be so much work that goes into these dolls..

A friend told me yesterday that he saw a show (must have been 20/20?) which said that a woman had left her Reborn alone in the car in a carseat and someone broke the window in an attempt to rescue the baby! And there are some that 'breathe'.. well, their chests move as if they are breathing, amazing!

LOL Kelly!

For the shorty fans, I read on another forum - from the lady who made 'her' - that Alice's baby was one of these dolls.

I've seen them before and also watched 20/20 - they're ok I think in the privacy of your own home, but to take them out and try to get other people commenting on 'your baby' is wrong!

I think they are creepy too - and people who buy the ones which have the breathing mechanisms and the ones which are deliberately made to look like extremely premature babies just cross the line into the seriously-needing-help category (I'm talking about people who buy these ones for 'fun' rather than using them for counselling or theraputic purposes)

I think they are called re-borns because basically the doll is taken fully apart, and lots of work goes into it, and it's kind of re-born i guess, but again i have no idea.
