Topic: Christchurch ladies please help Posted: 18 July 2006 at 8:31am |
I've just heard on another forum I belong to that apparently there is a billboard up "near the big park near town" encouraging Kiwis to only have 2 kids as the population is growing too fast... anyone seen it? Or any others elsewhere?
Sorry for the vague description of where the billboard is... it was given by an Englishwoman (who'd been in NZ on holiday) on an American-based forum!

I thought we had an ageing population...? and that our growth is only propped up by immigration???
Sorry, haven't heard about billboard tho! and I'm not in Christchurch!
Did a search on google and there doesn't seem to be anything either.. you'd think there'd be a bit said about it?!?

Yeah, it was the first I'd heard about it too! Nathaniel and I decided that even if we didn't live in the area the billboards were in, we would have heard about the protests over whoever sponsered them interferring in people's lives!

that seems crazy aye? that show that was on tv a while ago (dont remember what channel) said that not enough kiwiws are having 3 kids, but that was for a different reason, something more along the lines of each child has their role in the "birth order" and was it the middle child was more likely to go into a caring position for a job? and their werent enough careers? but just this year i must admit i know of a good handful of people having their 3rd babies, i didnt think it was that common, but maybe its getting more common to have 2+ kids?

Yeah, I'm more inclined to believe that Kiwis are choosing to have 2-kid-families rather than someone (not necessarily the government) has sponsered a billboard asking Kiwis to only have 2 kids.

I am an immigrant....but who isnt? I think it should be a personal choice as to how many kids you have. I dont think NZ has an Over-population problem.
And I think Govt want more immigrants because they need skilled people now. They cant wait untill all of us have babies and they grow up and become the skilled people......you know what I mean?
But if it was India or china then hell yah have one kid and thats it. I think China has a law where you can only have one baby and you need to make an application to request for another baby....I could be wrong!

i remember reading in a paper recently about a woman in china that died after falling off a roof, as she was trying to run away from hospital officials who were trying to forcibly give her an abortion. i thought that was so so sad. apparently this was her third child...

Its probably Hagley park she is talking about but I havent seen the billboard, will keep an eye out for it though. Funny but I couldnt imagine having more than two but thats because I dont think I could handle it. What annoys me about the whole skilled immigrant thing is that so many of our skilled nzers cant get jobs here! When it comes down to it I couldnt care less if for example I was having surgery and the surgeon was an immigrant or nzer but what about giving Nzers some opportunities too

That's what I mean, Robyn: you are choosing to have two (at this stage) because that's what suits you, not because it has been strongly suggested that that is what you should do!

I agree but the same thing is happening to the skilled migrants that are coming over here. My uncle is an accountant and has 13 years experience....he comes here and cant get a job.....that really sucks!! Specially because he thought he was going to get a better life in NZ.
My Dad is lucky, he got a job straight away, may be because he is an engineer. But you know the stats say that the unemployment rate in NZ is the lowest ever!!

thing is by the time we finish med school - our student loans are so large and the pay packets elsewhere are so much more appealing - a good psych nurse in auss could get up to $58 an hour - mikes aunty who is a psych nurse looked into it. The reason health professionals from other countries come here is cos the work conditions are possibly marginally better and the standard of living is better and because they have skills and experience the jobs are usually pretty forthcoming too. it's a catch 22, we all just swap places..

Thats true...would you consider moving to OZ Janine? A family friend is a nurse and she went to UAE to work and she was getting paid $200K for one year as well as accomodation, and two trips back to NZ a year....she stayed there for two years made loads of money and came back!!
I was considering going to OZ as I would get paid loads more there but wont because I want to be close to my family......

We're thinking about moving to Oz... but not because Nat would be paid better teaching over there
Nathaniel's sister, her husband and their 2 boys live on the Sunshine Coast. If we moved across the ditch, we'd go somewhere quite close to them... go to their church (where Bec and Dave are the assistant pastors) and Nat would (after a couple of years to give us a chance to get financially established) go to bible college.

yeah we are thinking of going to oz too, I love it there but its just the whole family thing thats holding me back.
My sister worked as a nurse in England for years and made so much money. my BIL is at chch hospital at the moment but loses his job in november and there are no jobs for him in the hospital even if he wanted to stay which I just find amazing considering how everyone goes on about the shortage of doctors.

Robyn...I am forever amazed how the health system works here....I remember when I had a bad bleeding at 18 weeks and went to emergency it took 4.5 hours for a doc to come and put a heart beat monitor on my tummy to tell me that bub is ok, while for 4.5 hours I was pouring my eyes out!. My dad was furious...how can you not have enough doctors in one of the countries major hospitals? I agree we need more doctors and we need them now!! I am really upset to hear about your BIL.....Seems rediculous!!

oh thats terrible Roskana, I would be so mad to. Luckily everytime we have needed it with baby things the medical treatment has been really good and we have never had to wait but I know how bad the emergency rooms can be. Yeah he is a trainee surgeon and has jsut got a job in cambridge but doesnt start till january and his internship here runs out in November so for those months he will be unemployed even though he could easily work as a doctor but they wont let him.
