Has anyone used these?
My son is 8months old and he is about 3cm from the top of his carseat! I think I'll need to get another one soon.
Do you really think it'd be okay for a 9month old to use this seat? He has been in a convertable from birth but it just seems a bit silly to buy another convertable now so I thought this might be a good option.

We have got one for Amy and i really like it but she didn't go into it until she was over 2. It only faces forward and so may not suit a wee child. What sort of seat do you have at the moment?

Before the Maxi Rider II Amy was in a convertable AHR (which Sophie now has) and she still had heaps of room. Could you rent a bigger convertable for a while? (try Baby on the Move). I know that the safety people are trying to encourage parents to keep children rear facing for longer. Sophie is still backwards and will be for a wee while yet.

I personally wouldn't use it for a 9 month old. We've got it for my son but he didn't go into it until he was about 18 months. At 9 months bubs should ideally still be rear-facing & I'd be surprised if he'd outgrown his carseat already unless he was super tall. Read the instruction book that came with your carseat, but most seats are ok until the childs eyes are level with the top of the seat which would mean your seat should be ok for quite a while longer if the top of his head is still 3cm from the top of the seat.

I had to turn him around already as he weighs more than the 9kg it allowed for. I think I'll have to take him to the plunket rental place and get them to look at it. I will also look at its manual if I can find it.
I don't want to be changing his seat but if I have to then I don't want to just get one that will do till he 18months old.

Hmmm kiddies should really rear face until at least 12kgs .. I would consider renting another convertible.

Also it is recommended that the baby stay in the seat they are in until they reach the maximum weight limit before moving up to another seat.

If you are wanting a seat that will last him .. why dont you look at getting a Brio?

Check out this website for carseat info:

http://www.childrestraints.co.nz/

I would personally keep him refacing as long as possible. It is so much safer that way in an accident. Their wee spines can get crushed if they are forward facing too soon - I thought the age was 1 year or 12kg, whichever comes first for forward facing. You can have them refacing for much longer than that though. The rental places aren't that expensive and it would be worth it to hire one until he is ready to move to the bigger seat.

I would love for him to be rearfacing still but his seat only went to 9kgs rearfacing and we could afford a second seat that allowed him to be rearfacing longer. The seat says he can stay forward facing in the chair until he is 18kgs so it must be a chair that is okay for his head to be above the seat. I hate that its not the safest position for him and Jess your story really didn't help with my not liking his position. I shell have yet another talk to DH about it but its all money isn't it.

You could try something like the Cosco Scenara seat which is around $130, is quite a tall seat & has a fairly high rear facing limit (16kgs I think). We've got the previous model to this & my tall 3 year old still fits it & will do for quite some time. (We have this one in our car & he has the Maxi Rider in my Mum's car)

I know which I would prefer in the money or the baby stakes

Those cosco seats are excellent value for money .. I think the Warehouse stock them.

If it is a money thing .. those Brio seats last for years! They rear face to 25kgs or something hardcore like that .. then you can turn them around and keep using them! Now that has to be good value.

I am looking into a brio as they do sound fantastic. I mentioned it to DH but he was dead det against it because he doesn't have an issue with him being forward facing and he hasn't exceeded the weight of the current one. Apparently he can stay in it till eye level so its still safe other than being forward facing which I have always been a little annoyed about. DH said that the law is 6month rear facing so it must be safe. I'm going to keep talking with him about it but at least I know that my seat isn't too small for my son as that's why I intially got parinoid about the seat.

How heavy is your son? If it's only a bit over 9kgs you could try & contact the manufacturer of your carseat & see if it's ok to use the seat rear facing for a bit longer until he's 1.
I don't think the law does say rear facing until 6 months? LTNZ recommend rear facing until at least 1 year, same as plunket recommend.

This Brio seat sounds amazing. Is it suitable for a newborn baby? Maybe if I can get one now I wont have to worry like the person who started the topic when my baby gets bigger.

I have a Brio and it is great - you can use it from newborn but I don't know that I would have. It looked a wee bit uncomfortable for a little baby even when DD went in at 6 months old. Just that she looked swamped by it IMHO.

But it is fantastic and we feel so good having it. Yes it's pricey up front but we feel it's worth it since the weight range is so big. We'll definitely be getting one for number 2.

The only downside is that while it's rear facing we have to have our front seat a little further forward than usual and DD will probably still be rear facing when #2 arrives.

There's a thread on Brio's somewhere in this section if you want a more detailed review of them.

p.s. Nutty I swear I'm not stalking you

Nutty I would totally go for the brio if you can. Maybe just hirer a capsule for the first few months if you didn't want baby in it straight away. I would hate for anyone else to be in my situation. I think I've decided I'm getting one even if DH doesn't want one. I'm going to try one out in the car to see if it fits okay because our car is not all that big but if i'm gonna get one to put him back to rearfacing I may as well make so he's that way for as long as possible.
THanks for bumping the other thread too.

Thanks everybody. first thanks for the tip, I think I will definately go for that seat, it looks as though it will last for a very long time, so the outlay should be worth it. We will probably hire a capsule in the beginning as bobbie mentioned her baby was very small in it to start out with.
