Topic: Problems with itti bittis Posted: 13 May 2009 at 11:34am |
I love my itti bitti nappies - I think they are so cute - but the hemp layer seems to be perishing! They're getting holes in them like the fabric is just disintegrating. Has anyone else had this problem??? I've had problems with other hemp inserts that have developed holes before too, so don't know if it's just the nature of that fabric or something I'm doing. I'm gutted because I really like the nappies, but expected them to last a bit longer than they have! Just glad I didn't fork out for a whole heap of them now....

i had the same problem so i contacted mothers instinct who i brought them from and she contacted itti bitti for me. This is what they said about the problem:
"She says the bamboo problem is really weird, it is just something that is a general bamboo thing and very rare and very occassional. She suspects it may have something to do with water, as it is almost common in Australia but pretty much non existent in NZ and Europe. It seems to have some correlation with teething wee, which is higher in ammonia than normal with some babies (and usually quite stinky). She recommends that you to 'damp' pail rather than dry pail if you notice very strong smelling wee, ie rinse the nappies before putting them in the nappy bucket, as you could get problems with other nappies as well."

check to make sure your washing powder doesn't have any baking soda in it, cause this errodes natural fibres like hemp and bamboo...

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one with that problem. I usually do rinse the nappies before I put them in the bucket so I'll have a look at the ingredients on my washing powder - I use Persil sensitive liquid, so I guess that could be the cause. For some reason I thought it was hemp in the itti's, not bamboo, but I've had this problem previously with hemp inserts from peapods as well. Gutted though as it doesn't look like they'll last all that much longer.

send them back to where you got them from and you'll get a replacement. It is a fairly random thing that happens now and again with bamboo and itti bitti are happy to replace.

I agree with Karyn - it sounds like a pretty random problem so if you bought them new you should send them back to whoever sold them to you. I've been using Ittis for over a year and have never had any problem with fabric quality.
