My little lady is 9 months old and is experiencing night terrors, this is diffo a young age for her age and is not common. This is horrible and very exhausting as this can last for 6 hours at a time. No matter how hard i try i can not calm her, best said all you can do is leave them to be and make the environment safe for them. It says it last 30 mins but not in my case. Been to see the docotor and he reakons they dont happen at her age, and flicked e off. GRRRRRRR!!!!!! Would interested to hear of simliar experiences

I was reading an article about them in the current My Child (Autumn 09) magazine. They say that if the hands-off approach doesn't work, you can try waking them 20mins before the night terrors start (as long as they happen at the same time every night). Wake them up fully, give them some water, and do that for 10 consecutive nights. And as a last resort there is a drug treatment that can be tried.

(Grrr, isn't it annoying when a doctor brushes you off like that?)

I don't have experience with night terrors in young babies, but Maya had them around 18 mths - 3 years, and Sienna had one the other night.

With Maya, she used to get so hysterical that I had to slap her to wake her up, and as soon as she was awake she was fine, she didn't remember a thing and would ask me why she was crying coz there were tears on her face.

I managed to settle Sienna thru it the other night without having to resort to waking her up, but it only went on for a few mins, not anywhere near as long as your wee one.

I would persevere with getting some decent medical advice coz your doctor sounds like he isn't taking it seriously. I can highly recommend the SleepWell clinic in Remuera but they are quite pricey, otherwise you should be able to get your GP to do a general paeds referral to the hospital and you can talk to them about it.

Cian has been getting them on and off since he was about 6 months old. His lasted for anything between 10 mins to an hour and were hideous!! I don't know what yours are like but Cian would just start screaming (like, a blood-curdling scream) while still asleep and absolutely nothing seemed to calm him. He'd stare at us with these big unseeing eyes (IYKWIM). We just hugged and rocked him (more for our benefit so we felt like we were doing something!!) until it passed, sometimes I could force him on the boob and that would generally calm him down, but only towards the end of the terror.

Cian's always come on if he's really overtired and generally about the same time (10-11pm). I totally don't envy you having to deal with it for 6 hours! you must be exhausted!

Definately try disturbing her before one is due if they are at all regular - I did it once and it worked a treat.

hang in there though - it will pass!

ETA: don't worry about getting brushed off by the doc - just get a second opinion - we were brushed off a couple of times when Cian had reflux and eventually found someone who would take us seriously, it made the world of difference

We sometimes get them about 45 minutes after Daniel goes to sleep at night. Really inconsistant. He wakes up crying, completely inconsolable, pushing you away but shrieks for high heaven if you put him down. We're lucky that he will calm down if we keep holding him and he's usually back asleep within 10 minutes.

Grrr at your GP - I thought 9 months was the typical time that they came on. I hope you can find something that works.

McKayla only got it a few months ago. Just before she turned 3. It was really horrible. She would scream and cry out for me but be fast asleep or not aware of what was going on. I tried the method that they say dont wake them up as it is bad for them but try to get them to go back to sleep. That didnt work at all.

She actually started hitting her head against the headboard of her bed. I tried to gently stir her but she was kicking and hitting. So we took her into the kitchen and got all the lights on and once had to take her out on the deck so the cold air could wake her.

Once she was awake she would silently cry. And if you ask her what is going on she was very confused and very terrified. Next day she cant remember anything. She wasnt breastfeeding anymore so what we redid eventually was give her rescue remedy drops. I would give her about 4 drops as soon as we could get it into her. Even if Grant had to open her mouth to get it on her tonge.

She would calm down within 5 minutes and be back to sleep. Did that for a week and we started doing it before she even went to bed.

For us we found the cause: She is highly sensitive towards certain colors and preservatives. It influenced other parts of her behaviour as well. So far she only had one night terror again and that is after she got something in going on a play date.

But Rescue remedy might be an option?

My DD1 had them exactly like this and they were everynight till around 2yrs then only 2-4 times per week till she was 4yrs. I learnt very fast to fully wake her up and she would just go back to sleep within 20mins. She never remembered them and now at 13yrs has no recollection of have regular nights of being woken as a little girl.
