Hi just a few quick questions from us, we're now looking (again) at moving to Pukekohe, there's just nothing suitable for us in Papakura - I've exhausted all options and am so over being dicked around by agents here!

So Pukekohe it is - can anyone advise me on the good/bad areas, which neibourhoods/streets to avoid etc. It will be just me and my 2yo son living on our own so safety/security is crucial.

Also - Kindy & playgroup recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as well as coffee groups etc :)

Thanks ladies!

I'm hoping nobody from the area will be offended by my saying this but if you have a look at a local map I would try to avoid the blocks between helvetia road, victoria st, dublin st and paerata rd, there are some parts in that area that are quite good but in general that is the rougher side of town. If you can get hold of a copy of the local paper (county news) there is normally a map showing where any burglaries have been in the area.

There are lots of lovely areas around though, it may pay to just go for a bit of a drive around to see if there are any areas that appeal.

I'm not sure about kindy etc but i do know that there is a playcentre on Victoria St West.

Hope that helps

Steph, I live in the 'bad part' of pukekohe and we have found it perfectly fine so far, our part of the street is really tidy and quiet, but as you go further down, like MrsH23 said it gets quite dodgy so id stay clear of the roads at the other end of Princes street(my road) etc.

You can generally tell what a road is like by looking at the propertys, if they look crappy and not looked after then its likely to be not a great place to live. The houses all around me are well kept and everyone is really quiet.

Thanks gals :) - I know that Puke is a lot like Papakura in that it has state housing/ predominately rental areas that can get quite rough ...and that its like having little 'pot holes' - bad areas mixed in between the good streets etc. And apparently gang headquarters out there too blah blah. I'm sure if I was to ask a real estate agent they won't be upfront with me iykwim

I remember seeing a Franklin paper a while back (didn't note down the streets) but i noticed all the crosses where the burglaries had been, were all placed on one side of puke ! I notice lots of rentals for Kayes Rd and Magnolia Rise which is in that area you mentioned, and I've been told to stay clear of Birdwood Rd - so looks like i might cut out that whole side/avoid it as best as possible.

The houses that I'm going to ring up about and ask to view don't have the addresses mentioned in the ad, but a couple say in 'Hill school zone'...if its the area I'm thinking of it looked quite nice when we were there on the weekend for the antique fair.

Awesome, thanks :)

I think you are fine if you stay this side of Helvitia Rd, I mean our road is always frowned apon when you mention it, but honestly, its fine, Im at the very top near helvitia so we are fine and the neighbours around us are all good, but as you go further down my road lots of other roads stem off it, and those are all a bit dodgy, but thats quite a way down.

Someone told me to stay clear of magnolia Rise as well. Might have been DH's mum lol

Yea Sheza is right about her road, either end is pretty good, it's just the bit in the middle (it's quite a long road) that can be a bit rough, but it's more the streets off it.

I'm not sure exactly where the whole the Hill School zone covers but my parents live just off victoria st west and we went to Hill School years ago, i'm sure the whole zone is actually really good.
