Topic: How much to charge?! Posted: 18 May 2009 at 8:38pm |
I have been asked by Janaya's deputy principal to take photos of their 25 year celebration thingee in the weekend. Great, no worries.
The problem is shes told me to give her a price and they will pay me. I HATE this!!!!
So how on earth does one calculate her worth? Im thinking maybe I should just do it for free?!
How do people usually work out how much to charge? Do I just calculate how much petrol, time etc? I understand it will be alot easier for those that are qualified or good at what they do but im just an amateur, I would feel embarrassed to ask for more than they were expecting!

Very tricky. Could an option be that you get reimbursed for petrol and any other costs that you get for doing the photo's and then say that the $?? be donated to the school for fundraising?

Since its your first job you could ask to be reimbursed for mileage (ird website has mileage charges), printing etc and instead of charging your time, ask for a reference/use of the schools name to promote your work, possibly on your own website????
A friend of mine lists her magazine clients on her website.

Be Checky and ask for the school fees to be wiped for a few years , that would cover payment.

We hired an amateur photographer (a photography student through SJS) to do our wedding photos and offered her $150 for the day plus paid for the film and processing (showing my age) and she got to keep a copy of all the photos for her portfolio.

I would charge yourself at $40-50 p/hr, or you could ask her how much she wants to spend. Being an Amatuer doesn't mean you aren't good. Don't undersell yourself.
Becks idea isn't a bad one.
What kind of photos will you be taking and will you be selling the prints, that's where most photographers make their money, you could maybe charge them $100 for the night and $10-20 per printed photo that's how much they charge for Ball photos. Good Luck.

Good on you
I'd charge something like this (each job has different requirements of course) -
$30-50 p/hr for my time
$50 approx for my petrol costs/use of my camera/etc
Then I charge them for each print. I have a digital camera so say it costs me 40c for a normal size photo I'd charge them $4. If it cost me $2 I'd charge them $20, etc.
Do up a list of the size photos you can print then put the prices next to them with an attached order form.
I'm a qualified photographer and freelanced before I got pregnant so this is just an idea of what I did.
Hope you have a great time
