Topic: Baby Showers Posted: 19 May 2009 at 11:37am |
I would really like to have a baby shower around about the 28wk mark and though it's still a little way to go I'm always thinking streets ahead.
I would like to celebrate the baby by having a shower, but do they have to be lame or obvious that it's about gift-giving?? To those who are thinking about having a baby shower or have had one:
1) Any GOOD games you'd recommend
2) Any ideas for how they could be done differently - I'd particularly like to find a way that I could make it really enjoyable and a treat for all the guests - but we don't have a lot of money to spend on it
3) Did any of you have a gift register or did you leave it open to your guests to bring what they like?
Thank you

I didn't do any games - I thought the games that were out there were pretty lame. My friend just made some nice food and got some people to bring a plate and we just hung out. It was really nice.
I didn't do any gift register or anything and I didn't get any double ups. But it might be nice to have a few things in mind that you need in case people are stuck for ideas.
Generally a close friend throws the shower so if you go that route it shouldn't cost you much at all.

I didn't do any games at mine, had mostly family there and a few friends. We just provided snacks and non-alcoholic drinks and some people brought a plate and others didn't. It was all very informal.
I told most people that they didn't have to bring a present but most people gave me one anyway.
Got given lots and lots of soft baby blankets which came in handy!
Oh and my mum organised my baby shower so didn't really have to do much myself.

I am helping organise a baby shower for a friend who is having #2 (no one threw a shower for her with #1) and we are having morning tea - helps bring the cost of food down if it is morning or afternoon tea as opposed to lunch.
We are doing a couple of games - use ribbon to guess the circumfrance of her belly, guess the DOB/weight/gender and each guest is to bring a baby photo and we guess who belongs to which photo.
If a friend or family member is throwing you the shower you could give them a list of things you want/need and they could let anyone know who is stuck for ideas.
Personally I don't think that if I am invited to a shower it is solely being held so the mum-to-be can get presents, so I don't think people will think that about you

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with getting presents at all, they aren't for you , they are for the baby , and why shouldn't your baby get something if people want to get him/her a gift ?
Imo, all coming babies deserve to be celebrated
My mum and a friend organised mine for Tyler (i cant even remember who came to Caitlyn's ) and we did a nursery rhyme game , a game where I was blind folded and had to guess the baby item , and the famous nappy game , where you guess what kind the baby food is, can also be done with chocolate .
But you can easily by pass all the games and make it an afternoon tea type affair or something, if your planning on finding out the sex and baby cooperates you can incorparate pink or blue into the day as well

We didn't end up doing the games I had planned and stayed up sorting at the last minute at my baby shower as everyone was catching up as we don't see each other as much as we used to and by the time we thought we should get the ball rolling a few had to go, I put on heaps of food, I told my friends to bring along their wee ones so they weren't rushed and they thought it was excellent "whose birthday is it?"
Also I made goody bags for everyone that came with a wee thank you card, warehouse have nice childrens goody bags, just with red fizzy drink, pinkie bars (well mostly chocolates) so the ones that brought their kids thought it was fantastic! haha

Thank you! I really like those ideas!!! I think a pink or blue theme would be nice once I find out the sex of the baby and some little giveaways would be nice, too. Thanks for the reassurance re: the gifts. Yes, I'd forgotten they're for the baby rather than for me!! That's a good way of looking at it.
And I like the idea of giving things away to the guests as a little gift at the end. That's really nice. Thank you!

Well, these are the games we did for my friends baby shower last year, we had a combined male and female shower:
* Everyone had to guess the baby food, there were about 5 jars of baby food that had the labels covered up and everyone had their own spoon and had to guess what the flavour was.
* This was a fun game for couples, they had to put a nappy on a doll using one hand each - fastest couple to do up the nappy wins.
* Fizzy drink was put in a few bottles (for this only the men did this) and they had to suck out the drink and then burp, first to do this wins.
* We each painted a plain white bib with non-toxic fabric paint, this I thought was very special for the mum-to-be to keep.

my mum organised my baby shower. My favourite game was that mum bought a pack of newborn nappies and all my friends had to write a message to me on them for the night changes it was priceless. Some of the ones i remember are you're this babies world' , 'i love you mummy' etc they made me really happy when i had to change his nappy alone in the mddle of the night and were a great encouragement. It was lovely.

Oh one thing we did do also, I cut out coloured card love hearts and asked each guest to write down some 'loving advice' for baby or words of congrats so we could stick them into our baby book

If I want one Ill HAVE to organise it. So many of my friends now live overseas or in Auckland so I seriously doubt Ill actually have one anyway. I really enjoy baby showers. They are such a cool girly event!!!

all my friends are so young so i knew none of them would organise one and i didnt want to ask. So i asked mum to do it - didnt feel rude about asking her and she was honoured

My husband organised a surprise baby shower for me. He invited the guests, organised games and food and told me the morning of it that everyone would be arriving at 2pm that day. What a sweetie, I didn't think I would have one.
