Weird question but I have heard a couple of people mention about preparing your nipples for breast feeding ie making them tougher by putting stuff on them or moving them around. Are you supposed to do anything like this? I have't been but thought I should ask in case I should be? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
I haven't heard that you need to do anything like that. You'll be okay, just be careful of them during the first few days (make sure Baby attaches properly etc) and you won't have any probs.
Youll find its older ppl that tell you that. Its something that they made women do about 30 years or so ago. lol. Its basicly an old wives tail. I cracked up when a friend of mines mum told her to brush her nipples with a toothbrush in the shower.
Brushing her nipple with a tooth brush. Did she enjoy that sort of pain?? I didn't do anything until after I had my monster. After he came along I just had to put some sream on them after every second or third feed to stop them getting dry and cracked.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
I exposed my nipples to sun light (not direct) when ever I could and that helped a bit...because tho I had sore nipples after Zaara was born...it could have been worse (according to my MW)...she told me to put cream on nipple and expose to sun light......helped heaps!!
But I certainly wont tug it around or brush it with a tooth brush either...Ooooouuuuchhhh
Ouch! My nipples have gotten quite sensitive already - I jump every time anything brushes up against them - there is no way I'm getting to them with a toothbrush any time soon!!!
Ouch - no toothbrush going anywhere near my boobies!
I did nothing with Maya, and had no problems with cracked nipples etc. Did use a bit of Purelan cream after she was born at the midwifes suggestion.
This time I have been using up my samples of nipple creams that I have aqcuired, more because my nipples are dry and a bit sore than to prepare them for breastfeeding.

I've got a nipple-preparation cream for pregnant ladies - I'm using it only because it's already here... I don't think it's doing anything! Mum found a bit of sunlight good when she was feeding (until the neighbour popped his head over the fence to say hello!). No way would I be taking a toothbrush to em... yeek.
