Topic: Irregular cycle stress Posted: 24 June 2009 at 10:57pm |
Hi there
I am having a problem and don't really know quite what's going on. My husband and I have just started TTC in the last few weeks. I went off the pill last March and since then my cycle has been a bit strange, it has mostly always come every month or maybe 6 weeks up until February this year. Then it started coming 2 months apart.
So Ive been to the doctor and she did blood tests which showed a slightly higher than normal level of testosterone, but everything else normal. So she said she was about 70 per cent sure it might be Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. However I don't really have other symptoms aside from bad skin sometimes and I'm not overweight but have difficulty losing weight. But not facial hair etc.
So I went to have an ultrasound today and they looked at my ovaries in detail, but they said that there was nothing of concern there at all.
Im having a blood test tomorrow to check for diabetes which I understand may have an effect on this.
So now I just don't know what to do or think, I mean the doctor says it could just be me, that my cycle is a bit longer... and I hope that's the case.
But yeah, I want to have a baby so badly that I was gutted when I found out I could possibly have a problem.
Does anyone have any advice here? If I'm having a period every 2 months, how do I tell when I'm ovulating? Is there anything I can take to speed it up?
Has anyone else had this problem? Does PCOS if I do have that mean that it's going to be really hard, even if I am having periods?
Im just really scared and yeah any advice would be much appreciated. I hope that made sense, thanks!

Welcome to OhBaby!
Do you chart, or use OPKs (ovulation predictor kits....you pee on a little stick and it tells you if you're going to ovulate within the next 24-48 hours)??
These are two effective ways of pinpointing ovulation. Charting is a simple method - you wake up the same time every morning, and take your temperature (you can take it in your mouth!!), then enter it into your chart (Fertility Friend is a good website to use). Your temperature varies depending on where you are in your cycle, and you get to see what is happening and when. If you have a look at the charting thread in here, you'll see some ladies charts - they are a good example of how your temperature differs throughout your cycle.
Good luck!!

Hi and welcome to OhBaby!!
If you only stopped taking the pill in march surely that could still be effecting your cycles?? did the dr mention that? It can take quite awhile before your cycles return to normal following BCP...
I have very irregular long cycles too and know how frustrating it can be while TTC... I totally reccomend using OPKs as minik8e said... I start using them about CD12 onwards so need lots! but you can get them cheap off the net... also monitoring CM... infact I find monitoring CM the most reliable for me.... then the OPK confirms the LH surge (which happens prior to Ov)... I don't chart but it is a good way to confirm Ov has happened but won't tell you when it's going to happen which is often the difficulty with long irregular cycles...
I have also been taking vitex the last two cycles and it has worked a treat! I usually have 45-65 day cycles and my last one was 38 days so that may be something you want to consider....
hope that helps....
good luck!!!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble.
I also have irregular long cycles - apparently mine are caused by a luteal phase defect. I am able to fall pregnant naturally it just takes forever.
Good luck!

Hi I have irregular cycles, infact we sound very similar all round.
I have highish testosterone, but everything else normal. I don't have other symptoms except from bad skin sometimes and I'm not overweight but I also have difficulty losing weight. But not facial hair etc.
I had an ultrasound and it was really devastating, my right ovary was covered in cysts and much bigger than it should have been. Since then I have been trying to regulate my blood sugar and I would really like to go for a follow up scan soon and see how its going.
However I appear to be ovulating and my cycles have settled down to about 33-40 days in length now which I can cope with.

Hi there, thanks for all your replies.
When I said I stopped taking the pill in March I meant March last year, so it's been over a year since I stopped. It took about 2 months to get a period again once I stopped, then after that until January this year they came pretty much every month, maybe about 6 weeks apart at most.
But then in March, I didn't get one and it came in April. Then the same thing happened in May, and I got one in early June. So I am ovulating, just not every month.
How long does it usually take for the pill's effects to get out of your system?
I am interested in starting to figure out when I'm ovulating but I am so clueless in all of this, first baby first time trying and yeah no idea really, still learning how all this works.
When you are charting, what sort of temperature would be normal and what would be considered higher ie. ovulating? I have no idea about temperatures lol.
Can you please also explain to me what the abbreviations you used meant freckle, ie. CD12, CM?
Basicially Im just in such a state worrying about what's going on with me because I don't have any cysts on my ovaries, but I've read you can have PCOS anyway without them.... which seems strange? But I guess you can.... did I do anything that would have caused this or do people just get it?
I had a blood test for diabetes today so I'll see what comes back from that.
I guess Im just panicking about whether I'm going to be able to conceive, Im sure I probably can, I mean aside from the slightly high testosterone I am still ovulating, I guess I'm just scared it will stop! We've only been trying 2 weeks so no need to stress yet but yeah.
This whole thing is very overwhelming and I'm scared TTC is going to get very stressful when it shouldn't be....
Sorry that was a bit of a ramble!
Also freckle, my friend mentioned vitex. Where do I get it from? How long does it take to work?
Thanks again to everyone who replied

There's a thread called TTC 101 somewhere..maybe in General?? It has all the abbreviations for you to learn this new language hehehe
To start you off though, CD10 is cycle day 10 (CD1, or cycle day 1, is the first day of your AF (Aunt Flo = period). CM is cervical mucus...there are different types that you get at different types of the month, which indicate different things.
For charting, there isn't a "normal" temperature as such, it's the pattern that it follows. For example, at the start of your cycle it's lowish, then it rises after ovulation has occurred (ovulation can be indicated by a little dip, but not always). When you produce progesterone is when your temp rises, and progesterone is produced only after you ovulate, which is why your temp rises. Your LP (luteal phase...the length of time between ovulations and your next period) will have higher temps than the temps before your ovulation, and the temps will either stay up if you're pregnant, or drop back to pre-ovulation levels if your AF is on its way. A standard LP is around 14 days long, but can vary!!! This is a very very basic explanation.....Fertility Friend has a charting course you can do (it's free) which explains things a lot better!!!
Cycles can vary in length - mine were between 35 and 49 days, but I had no trouble getting pg, just keeping it. Other people have stock standard 28 day cycles - we are all individual!!
I hope this helps you some

I think minik8e covered most your questions as for the vitex it is suppose to take up to 3 months to start working, however, for me it worked the first cycle I took it... You can get it from healthfood stores, it's about $20 for 60 pills. Some people take it as a tincture as it is suppose to work faster but I found the pills worked very fast and didn't taste foul ... vitex basically balances out your hormones...
I hear what ya saying about not wanting it to be a stressful process! That's one of the reasons I don't chart as I would get too obsessed but it would be a great way to confirm Ov... if ya keep an eye on ya cervical mucus when it becomes clear and stretchy (like egg white) that is usually the fertile phase of your cycle...

Also...check out the infertility section...there are whole threads devoted to PCOS as well as those ladies who take clomid to regulate cycles. They are lovely ladies and very helpful as well :-)

Looooooong time lurker - first time poster
This thread sounds exactly like me!
Seeing the Dr on Monday for my blood test results - apparantly my cholestral is really high - don't know if that effects TTC?? By my cycles have been getting further and further apart - up to 70 days!
Good luck Lisaas101 - it's stressful realising that TTC is not as easy as you first thought, but like the girls have said above - there seems to be plenty of options that will hopefully speed the process along!
Now that I've finally taken the plunge and started posting, I guess I need to get one of those ticker things sorted...!

The pill can really muck your AF around. If you think about it, the pill is made up of synthetic hormones. Your body adjusts to having these hormones supplied for years, and then you take that away. I think for some women, your body kinda forgets how to produce its own natural hormones and just doesn't know what to do. That's my theory, anyway.
I have PCOS, no symptoms apart from an irregular cycle and a couple of random hairs on my chin. My testosterone and glucose levels are too high. I'm taking chinese herbs to try and get my hormones back on track. Vitex is a good option, and I've also just recently learned about Femzone, which you could also try.
I have one friend who didn't have a period for 2 years after coming off the pill. Because of my theory, there's no way I'd ever go back to being on the pill. I totally think it's one of the reasons why my hormones are all screwed. I think that some of us just have a more sensitive system than most and I fit into the sensitive category. Of course, medical professionals will disagree with this but I'm losing my faith in modern medicine.

Hi
My experience sounds familiar.
I had been on the pill for about 9 years, I came off the pill once during that time for about 6 months and didn't get a period at all. When I got engaged I came off the pill permanently as I knew I would want to get pregnant soon after the wedding (which was 18 months away).
After 8 months of waiting, still no peiod so I went to the doctor who wasn't much help and said to keep waiting, did a few blood tests etc.
So I went to see a Traditional Chinese Medicine dr. I was a bit dubious about it, especially when I saw the herbal concoction that I was to drink everyday. But one week after taking these herbs I got my period, and i continued to take the herbs everyday for a month and then my period was regular every 5 weeks. I charted during the time leading up to TTC and knew my body really well and then I got pregnant the first cycle of TTC.
The Chinese dr said that being on the pill can affect your body making its own fertility hormones as you are putting aftificial homones into your body everyday. Also, I read an interesting fact that if you had irregular periods before going on the pill, the pill can be even more detrimental to your cycle which you won't notice til you come off it.
I would also recommend reading the book 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' by Toni Weschler.
I am currently TTC for my 2nd, and am taking vitex in the hope I get my period back as I am still breastfeeding.

That makes me feel so much better!
My Dr told me today I most likely have PCOS so it's really interesting to hear about the chinese medicines, and that they have worked so well. I will have to do some investigating!
And I'm also going to seriously think twice before going on the pill again!

I would totally go and see a Traditional Chinese Medicine dr. I was so sceptical, but the herbs that I took completely fixed my cycle in a very short space of time.
Before I tried it I was tested for PCOS, and nothing showed up, and then the normal dr just told me to wait.

Hello, I'm new to this forum, but also suffer with irregular cycles. I think I have always had this problem but obviously you don't really think about it when you're younger. I can't remember anyone mentioning it would be a problem and till I started TTC, the penny never dropped. Now it seems obvious it would have to be a problem. So we have been trying for 6 months and so far NOTHING! My doctor has me on primulut for 3 months to try and kick start a regular cycle - anyone know anything about how effective this is likely to be? I have also been using ovulator prediction test strips, it showed up positive about 2 weeks ago, so was hopeful but you know what arrived this morning so no luck this time. Any advice would be great, I find this difficult to talk about even with my best friend (she is 32 weeks pregnant and it happened straight away for her so she just doesn't understand), also my sister is 15 weeks pregnant - I am happy for her but she is over 3 years younger and again it just happened straight away for her. I can't help feeling a little jealous

Hi Gypsy, I'm new to the forums too and also have irregular cycles due to my pcos. We have been trying for nearly a year.
I agree it is hard talking about it with friends that don't have any problem with getting pg, they just don't get it. Mind you my bf is really good about it and doesn't keep saying (unlike everyone else) don't worry it will happen.
I assume your doctor has done all the usual blood tests?

I haven't heard of Primulut Gypsy, but then I'm very new to the whole PCOS thing! Only found out I had it a week ago, although now it seems so obvious - I don't know why I didn't pick up on it earlier!
I get that same jealous feeling! Is it just me or is there a baby boom going?! But I just think that when it does happen, I will look back and realise that it happened at the right time. That's my 'seeing the glass half full' theory anyway. I'll see if I'm still as positive after my fist FA appointment this week, when I find out how serious things really are!!

Hi Lisa, there is a drug called Metformin which is prescribed for PCOS and it is known to regulate hormones including lowering testosterone. Maybe ask your GP about it and do a google on it. I have found a few websites that have had success stories using it.
Here is a link to one of those sites :

Sorry for my delayed response, have been avoiding the forums as I was getting too obsessed with worrying about my cycle and stressing myself out to no end, as Im sure you understand.
An update is that my bloods came back normal other than the very marginally higher than normal testosterone and my ultrasound came back normal, so my doctor said I don't have PCOS, which is a huge relief.
This month my cycle also came on time for the first time in ages. Coincidentally I started taking vitex a week before it came but I don't think it could work that quickly?
So I don't really know what's up but the doctor said I should be fine to get pregnant, so now I'm just waiting for ovulation and just got to try I guess hehe
Would be cool to chat to others throughout this process as like someone else mentioned it's hard to talk to people about it when they don't understand!
