We've "just moved" (6 months ago...) to CHCH and need to find a few important (and not so important) things.

  • A good family GP (especially for little-wee babies as we'll probably be moving away at the end of the year!)
  • A good chiro or osteo
  • Good places to eat or get takeaways for vegetarians
  • Good sushi!

If anyone has any recommendations (or places to stay away from!) I'd be very grateful. We live in Richmond so a GP in the area would be good - we're in walking distance to St Albans, Shirley, Linwood, Avonside and the central city. Thanks in advance

I used to live in Richmond, love it there because it is nice and close to everything!
Sorry can't help you out on a GP because I can't stand mine but would be interested to hear other's suggestions.
Kaptein Chiropractors are good. They are on Manchester St down the St Albans end, so nice and close to you. There are a few different chiros there but I have found them all good.
If you like Indian food the best indian (IMO) in ChCh is It's Indi which is in Richmond on the cnr of Stanmore Rd and Nth Avon Rd. They do great vegetarian dishes. The best fish and chips around there is Richmond Seafoods on Stanmore Road too and there is a good thai place as well - Bahn Thai. Ma and Pa's bakery is really popular for their bread and pies (also Stanmore).
As for sushi, Sushi Express is pretty good at The Palms, but I also like any of the St Pierres.
Hope you enjoy ChCh!

I am based In St Albans so most things I know are around there.

I use Promed Edgeware for the GP's. They work in a team of 3 so you just turn up rather than make appts. i often ring and say I am coming down now so they stick our name in line. The nurses there are awesome with DS. I love them!

The chiro that has been recommended to me is in Thames St. He did wonders with my friends wee bubba as swell. I can't remember his name or number but am heading out that way shortly so will write it down when I go and post later.

Vegetarian takeaways - no idea but I love the kebab shop on the cnr of colombo and edgeware rd. In the Edgeware village there. Fantastic and I know they do a vegetarian option. No decent Thai or Indian in St Albans so I usually go into Manchester St and pick up Manee Thai or Tulsi Indian.

My favoruite sushi place is at the Palms too but the other end. Down by Woolworths - Mako Mono ro something similar. LOVE it and MISS it!!

Hope that helps!

I second Peanut on Maki Mono at Palms for sushi. My personal favourite is a tiny place in New Brighton called Sushi and More - it's hard to find, next to Jackson Bakery (it's not the big, easy to find sushi place) - AMAZING sushi, best i've eaten and great hot meals too.

Vege food - I eat a lot of vegetarian, but often just order of the normal menus or have thai. Mainstreet used to be my fav vege place, but that's gone now...otherwise try Dux de Lux or Lotus Heart (both in town).

We use Christchurch Family Clinic as our GP, they're in Barbadoes Street just off Bealey Ave.

For Vege food... (or any food..)
South of the border on Colombo St for Mexican
Topkapi Kebab House on Manchester does THE BEST eggplant kebabs
Our favourite fish and chips is on Woodham Road, Dallington Fish Supply, they have amazing chips, and also their fish is absolutely huge and crumbed and yummy.
Riccarton mall has an upstairs foodcourt now, the thai is delicious, and there is a roast place too, for a roast without the meat it only costs me $2.90 for a full plate. They're open till 9pm every night.

Awesome thanks for all the great advice! We now have plenty of new food places to try!

Would still like to get a few more people vouching for their GPs and/or back-fixing-people

PS. What's the difference between a chiro and an osteo???

My GP (also my sons) is Andrea Caldwell at the St Albans Medical Centre on St Albans Street. Her office is in "The Cottage". She is great doctor and a very lovely lady. Jan is the nurse and she is very helpful. I have rung a couple of times and Jan has given me advice over the phone saving me the hassle of going in to see them.

My osteopath is Richard Janssen and he works out of Northlands Medical and Sportscentre on Main North Road. DF and I have been going to him for years and we have recommended him to a few people and they all still use him.
I think osteopaths do a little less clicking of joints and work a bit more on the muscle. Both DF and myself have very physical jobs and would highly recommend an osteo.

Cosy Kitchen in South City Mall do a fantastic tempura vegetable sushi!

Huge difference between chiro and osteo - chiro do spine tx on the whole and osteo do nervous system and spine. That's fairly simplistic discripiton.

Second reccomendation for Richard Jenson, I send all my clients to him or to Guy Trolove at Active Health in QEII. He's fantastic. He does cranial sacral work as well.

My fav cafe is by Piko corner of Barbados and Kilmore. Divine veggie/GF food.
Angel babies Mar '04, Oct '08 and Sep '09.
