Topic: HELP ME RE: FOOD Posted: 20 September 2006 at 11:41am |
I need some help. Last week i was looking fantastic and was back to my pre-baby weight. I felt and looked great. Over the weekend and this week i have been getting really hungry all day long and have been eating crap food. I am going to the vege place today to get some fruit but is there anything more interesting that you know of which is good for you?
I am breastfeeding so can't "diet" as such but would really like some tips on heathly snack foods.
ETA: I am trying to lose some weight as well.

Have you considered doing the Weight Watchers lactation plan in 3 more weeks? I believe it's a 6 weeks you can start it. Someone is bound to have the info so you can do it at own instead of going to meetings. That's my plan anyway!
As for snacks....fruit is the obvious one but there are some others that I really enjoy and have found work for me...
baby carrots/celery and hummus (yum)
Rice crackers and salsa to dip
Weight watchers breakfast bars toasted
It's also not a bad idea to have a few sweet things on hand to have occassionally...that way you are less likely to binge!
Freeze snack size pinky bars...yummy treat and last longer frozen!
weight watchers biscuits
Low fat yoghurt ( the lite dessert ones are yummy!! there are flavours like apricot danish and lemon menguerine - again good for a sweet treat)
Hope this helps a little!
Good luck!

Oooh mini Pinky bars... there's only like 2 1/2 points in a big one too, I used to have them as treats.

i havent heard of the weigh watchers plan for breast feeding mums.... i'd be interested to find out more too.. thanks for mentioning it paws
im no way near my pre pregnancy weight about 8 kg over at least.
the thing that got me is last time with emma, i breastfed and everyone said that it helps with weight loss afterwards, but for me even though i ate really healthy and walked heaps everyday i gained a HUGE amount of weight and it wasnt until stopping feeding at 5 months (and my periods returned) that the weight just fell off of me and i lost over 20kg.
intersting fact i just read about 10 mins ago in a baby book (treasures baby book) is " raised progesterone levels mean that a few women dont lose weight, and may even gain weight while breast feeding" i wish i had of known that back then because it really depressed me at the time, and im sure people were judging me, well it felt like it anyway. i hated the thought that people may be thinking i was lazy or something.
im not one of these people that "obsess" about their weight i was just upset that it was pilling on for what seemed like no reason and i wanted to feel good about myself and i do again now

I packed on weight while I was b/f Maya too, but mostly because after 9 mths of throwing up every day I could finally eat again - and boy did I eat!
Am going to be much more careful this time round, although I only seem to have gained weight around my middle this pregancy not all over like last time, so hopefully it will come off easier, plus I will be b/f twins on a dairy free, egg free diet, so am hoping that will help too!

mini pinky bars are a great idea, marshmallow in general is low in points so keep some on hand. Also the smaller gingernuts, not arnotts but that other brand are really low in points for a sweet treat. I have just had rice crackers with hummus, a yoghurt and banana for lunch and i think all up it was probably only 5-6points. Also i find i get fuller quicker if i prepare a meal/snack rather than picking all the time cos it looks like more sitting on my plate if that makes sense.

The problem with marshmallows is that they come in such big packets, and you can't eat just one marshmallow...

Linelle, bfing makes you really hungry. Drink heaps of water which helps a bit with the hunger, have a good breakfast (cereal, toast, fruit) and snack on the yummy things that the others have mentioned. Good luck

Linelle... you need lots of calcium and protein to your diet. So down yoghurts and cheese! (Little toads suck the calcium straight out of your bones if you don't have enough in your diet)
And get some nuts for protein, yummy pistaschios, cashews, and almonds! That way you can snack while feeding.
It may feel like you are eating heeeeeaps, but you need it. Just keep going the way you are and make sure its healthy.

you do need to eat more when you're breastfeeding. and don't worry too much, if you're already down to your pre-pregnancy weight then you're doing fantastic! i didn't get back to that til mikey was about 6-7 weeks old.

Speaking of cheese...those Mainland cheese and cracker packs are really handy and not at all unhealthy! Plus they are really filling.
The only other thing I thought of is try to make sure you are having a portion of protein and a portion of carbs with your main meals. (I promise carbs are not the enemy!!!). Go for things like your brown rice, brown breads, kumera instead of potatoe...anything low GI...it will fill you up, release energy more slowly then a sudden hit which then disappears, and is really good for you!

yeah low GI food is pretty important, grain bread, youghurt etc.... I was on a low GI low sugar and fat (or should i say no sugar and fat) diet with the gestational diabetes and lost weight in my last trimester.

Yeah I've found I've done the same thing! Although I haven't offically been told its gestational diabetes I still had my instructions to cut out the sugar/fat and eat low GI. (we'll ignore the odd trim hot chocolates that have found their way in! )

Holy cow - you're ALREADY back at your pre-pregnancy weight... legend!!! I hope I'm like that (seriously doubting it, but hoping nonetheless!). You lucky, lucky lade - just don't stress about losing any further weight, you're far too busy and important in baby's life to let yourself go hungry.
