Hey, Morgan is really having trouble with wind and its driving me batty (would be fine if I didn't have a whiney toddler with chickenpox to deal with too!). Its like she has colic but without the crying!! She is up for 3-4 hours plus most evenings and as soon as she drifts off is awake again squirming with wind. We are spending the whole time holding and rocking her, which is a pain ... but she is also getting quite windy during the day now so is taking ages to get down (not as long though). I've tried colimed spray, gripe water, cooled boiled water, every winding technique we know and dh is off to get some infacol which someone suggested so fingers crossed that works. I have also taken the things that made Jake windy out of my diet - chocolate, fizzy drinks, orange juice and citrus fruit, and now cheese too. Maybe I need to cut down on the lollies?!

She is a bit of a guts / gulper so have tried sitting her up a bit more too.

She shows all the classic signs of wind and I have heaps of milk so its not hunger in the evening (actually think an over-supply is causing part of the problem, but i am trying to address that). Have also tried taking blessed thistle (worked for jake) but apparently that increases milk supply so I'm not keen to keep taking them as that may be making it worse!

She is great once down and will sleep for hours so can't really complain. But sometimes (evening generally) she is awake so long she needs another feed, which make the whole thing worse! (so I try not to).

So -- any suggestions?!? DH is back to work next week, so I won't have time to be winding / rocking her for an hour at a time then!! (with whiney toddler underfoot).

I know Plunket says not to but I slept my boy on his tummy when he had wind and I found even better than that was to get a donut pillow and put him on his tummy over that. I know its not as safe but I just checked regularly.

Henry had really bad wind and also reflux. We started sleeping him on his tummy at about 4wks because the only place he would sleep was on my chest on his tummy so though maybe he would sleep if we put him on his tummy - and tada he did. Seemed he could bring up wee burps in this position while asleep if he needed to. I still kept him upright for 40mins after each feed but that was for his reflux and i used a tri pillow proped up against the couch on the floor so he was in a semi upright position. Front pack also worked well for the 40mins we kept him upright. A front pack might work until you find a solution for the wind. At least then youd be hands free. Good luck hun

Hi there, you have my sympathy as we went through this with my 4 month old in the early weeks - its exhausting. I also had / have an oversupply of milk. A lactation consultant recommended that I take a full hour to feed my son, feeding a wee bit and then taking him off to wind and spill and then back on again until the hour is up. It really helped. Also with my milk supply bub was getting loads of milk at each feed so I have been quite strict with the 3 hourly feeds and that way he doesn't get overfed and seems a lot more comfortable. The lactation consultant also recommended short, hourly cluster feeding in the evening before bed so as to get them full but not overload their tums and make them gassy. Hope this helps and good luck to you!

I use to either express some milk off first or latch him on and then when he pulled of cos of my letdown I would let my boob spray into an old style cloth nappy (still have to do that sometimes) and then put him back on once my boob had calmed down. I also found that using a dummy helped him bring the wind up as the sucking seemed to relax him and also putting him on his tummy for bit.
I also cut out all dairy and all chocolate, I now have milk in my tea/coffee and some chocolate as he seems ok if I don't go over board.

The only other thing I can suggest is maybe getting a front pack or sling and using that for a while until she is a bit older and better at bringing up the wind.

Oh and one other thing have you thought about seeing an osteo, I took Kyle to one, he was vontouse delivery so a bit of a rough arrival, and he stopped doing the back arching after feeds after seeing her. Didn't help him sleep any better though

Thanks for the advice, defn a few things to try. She does settle better upright on my shoulder on her tum, so may try a wedge during the day (in a hammock at the mo so an't put her on her tum). Should take her to the Osteo for a check too. And I was thinking of moving to a 3 hourly feed cycle - she can easy go at least 4 hours at the mo (guess cos shes getting so much milk!). So my boobs are really full each feed.

The infacol seems to have helped, and I shortened her night time routine so I had her down at 6.30 ... although she was windy beforehand I somehow managed to get her down with no walking/rocking/dummy once we got the wind up, and just a short cuddle over my shoulder. So hopefully things are improving!

Sharlene Poole, the baby whisperer was on good morning on Tuesday talking about burping and wind and if you go onto the TVNZ website you will be able to go and watch her clip..

See if this works:
http://tvnz.co.nz/good-morning/s2009-e210709-babywhisperer-video-2858443

Just scroll down the list and you will see the 21 July tv clips, there is two separate ones, one for the technique demo and one for the question and answer session. I hope that it is helpful.

Had the same problem with Aston. tried all the things you did, and some Rhuger as well. Nothing worked, 2 doses of Rhuger & he came right - but I think he may have just learnt to burp better! These babies have to learn a lot of things & time seems to sort most of it out (doesnt help in meantime, trying stuff feels waaayyy more productive when you have a crying baby!)

He's a tummy sleeper too (but has awesome head control) and he can burp on his tummy but not on his back... if he has wind & i lie him on his back he would scream.

Only thing with tummy is he finds it harder to fart - farts better on his back, so sometimes he wakes himself up if he needs one!

On our way out the door so have to be quick otherwise DH will get grumpy!! Try Naturo Pharm Antimonium Tart if it is wind. It is from their Classical range but can be hard to find. The mw at Helensville gave Ben some and he burped almost instantly. Good luck

Thanks Red, I tried her method ... worked a couple of times, but not consistently.

What's Rhuger kmasonnz?

Thanks Linzy - will have to send dh out for some. Their colimed spray worked really well with Jake, but he didn't have wind issues like Morgan - it does nothing for her!

I found taking fennel seed tablets & drinking fennel tea helped a bit with wind when I was breastfeeding.

I did the fennel tea thing as well, and chamomile, which I think helped, if you can stand the taste!

Rhuger is a rhubarb ginger mix that I bought online from a pharmacy in dunedin as I was getting to point of trying anything and it was recommended by someone else on OB forums...

Hi Nikki,

I really REALLY struggled with Tyler's wind when he was little, he grew out of it by the time he was a couple of months old. I found the only thing that worked for him was Weleda Colic Powder... not something you would normally use for wind. I mixed it with boiling water (I think 5 mls from memory) and gave it to him in one of those munchkin medicators before every feed and it worked SOOOOO well. Its a homeopathic remedy

Oh good idea RoSee - might have to try it. She is actually getting alot better now - the infacol seems to help, and my boobs are not overproiducing anymore which must help (gone the other way for a few days actually - she can't get enough - so I'm using the blessed thistle now and expressing again! haha).
