Topic: Constantly late worker Posted: 29 July 2009 at 9:55pm |
Not sure how a constantly late worker should be managed - some days its up to an hour or more ... Has been told that they should turn up at the same time as every one else but still won't, late also some days back from lunch ... Starting to cause negativity.

3 warnings and gone. That is grounds for dismissal.

Doesn't sound like they want to work there anyway.
Yep I would start the warning process. It's a long process though - and do make sure that you follow it precisely or you could be up for a world of trouble with the employment tribunal.

Does he stay later to compensate for the lost time? I am the opposite - I liked to go in super early, and then leave bang on 5pm.
I think there should be some degree of flexibility, but it sounds like this guy is just taking the piss. If he has been spoken to about it, but has not made any changes, then I would start the warning process. Check contracts first - does his state working hours?

They asked to start early so they could have some peace and quiet but lately they haven't and kind of wander in, sometimes have a full lunch (plus more) and some days not not, sometimes stays late but more often not at the moment. Us being the collegues think it becoming a joke ... someone else will always come to the rescue.

I had a colleague who did this a few years back. They also claimed they would work "late" to make up for the lost time, but that meant not walking out the door at 5.30pm on the dot, not actually staying till after 6. Then the excuse was it was tough getting into town on the bus by 8.30am. Um, sorry, everyone else makes it on time! The person was actually made redundant very shortly after this, and it's probably only the company I worked for being big and able to restructure easily that made that possible (it wasn't entirely ethical IMO). But it certainly made the rest of the team happier.
If you're the manager then I would definitely start giving written warnings. If you're not you'll probably have to suck it up till the manager grows some and tells them to be on time or else they're out
So frustrating though, I know.

A friend of mine has just been fired from his job after repeated warnings for lateness. He was on his third written warning showed up an hour late one morning and that was it, he was gone that day, they were fed up. He was quite a valued member of staff usually and often did heaps of overtime, worked public holidays and weekends and had heaps of responsibility but when it comes down to it, you can't love your job too much if you're willing to lose it over being late. And what a time to put your job at risk! Not a lot of work around at the moment and he now has nothing!

It sounds like its coming down to bad management. Has someone said something? I have done and would do again. Sometimes management is blind to it....

I just thought I'd add, when I had morning sickness and was struggling with work and with functioning in general, I made DH late for work a few times, as well as him having to leave early to take me to the docs or home to bed quite a bit. (I was fainting way too much for it to be safe to drive myself and had a few other potential complications so we really had no choice). It was hard because we wanted to keep it a secret till 13 weeks, but in the end he had to tell his immediate boss because it was looking like pretty poor form from DH. Some of the other staff were getting a bit miffed, but forgave us when they found out why.
So maybe give him a chance to explain whats going on before you launch in to telling him off? I know I was feeling terrible as it was, and worrying about DH getting into trouble for taking care of me didn't help any!

yeah acutally that's true - Maybe it would be worth checking that if you haven't already. My DH has had to start late and take a lot of lunches at home lately because I've been sick with EVERYTHING this winter.
But having said that he does let his bosses know and he makes up the hours.

I used to work with a lady who was repeatedly late for work, at least 15 minutes every day, up to an hour some times. But she always pulled in the big clients so managed to get away with it. A couple of times it was made mention of in staff meetings about people's tardiness, but she didn't seem to get any warnings for it that we were aware of.
It just made the rest of the staff dislike her as she got away with it all of the time and made no effort at all. And she didn't have children that she was getting ready, she just lived ages away from work and spent forever in the morning doing her hair etc.

I used to do shift work & one shift finished at 11pm, the next person in was always late, so I would have to wait around as it was a solo position. I kept telling her I wanted to go on time but she did not care & management never did anything about.
So I went on leave for a couple of days & the person who took over for me was someone who does not stand for any sh*t, & had management & the ofender in a meeting for a couple of hours to talk about why she had to wait and not go home on time, lol.
So the outcome was, she got warned, came to work early all the time & it was work as usuall, oh & I got to leave on time.

Its going to be bought up with management! Just hoping something happens. It has been bought up with this person about times of starting but there is always an excuse why they are late and they come back at other times and therefore it all balances out! It was like a fish out of water this morning it was amusing. They say they have always down it in each job they have - WOW lucky them. I think its abuse as it contintious. Will be interesting.

wow, i hope they do something about it, it seems like they are definatly taking advantage of the situation seems they have been getting away with it, we are pertty flexable with our employees but they know if they are going to be late to ring & let someone know, & if it was happening all the time theyd be warned & then theyd be gone.
