As some of you probably saw on my FB page, I won a family portrait sitting worth $295. Yay. Well, not so yay as I have just found out. It includes the sitting/photography, but then we have to pay for the images and they cost $195 per image for a 6x4 image and more if you want bigger size, etc. etc. WTF!!

Is it me, or is that just bloody ridiculous?! I REALLY wanted to get some family pics and some of the kids, but there is no way, no how I can afford that sort of price. I'm so peeved

Does anyone know of anyone in CHCH that is more reasonable? I'm desperate to get some photos taken of the kids before they get bigger, especially Ben.

I know what you mean, I won a photography comp and got a $250 voucher. Turns out all we get for that is the sitting and a measley 5x7 print. When we went to see them, the cheapest we could get was a $150 5x7 print, the next one up was $900. It was ridiculous!!!!
I really didnt "win" cause now I feel awful that we have to leave behind these fantastic pics!

I'm not even going to bother, I mean, it would be a waste of my time as well as them - we simply can't afford more than one print at that price!

Man that sucks and it is mega expensive! I can't believe how much some people spend on professional photos, they are actually easy to take yourself as long as you have a nice location outside and a reasonably good camera. With digital nowadays you can take hundreds and then choose the nicest ones to get printed, then you just need to spend the money on nice frames. Even better is if you have an SLR or know someone who will loan you one.

they do that all the time
Shellandbella have you thought about approaching the local polytech see if they've got any photography students who want some work/practice you could pay them a nominal fee and get them printed yourself

I had the same thing happen to me a little while ago, it was worth $250 and was just for the sitting. Their prices were disgustingly high and they rang me ALL the time trying to get me to make an appointment, what days they wanted me, what I had to wear, the photographer was booked, so it would be rude of me not to go.

I didn't show up, because they woudn't leave me alone!

I ended up getting some pictures done with Expression Sessions, I think they are an Australian company, but happened to be doing a promotional day at my local mall. They did the sitting there and then which was free. I got a package deal of 9 photos which cost me around $400.   I paid it off at $15 a week and have just finished doing that. I don't know why, but after I paid them off, they sent me the ones I didn't choose so ended up with 15 professional photos for just over $400.

I hate those companies that 'gift' you vouchers like that, it's such a huge scam!

Shell, I used Sarah from momentz and paid for her to come down to Cromwell. I shared the costs with another family and it cost us $300 each and we have ALL our photos on CD to do with as we wish plus she did one free enlargement 10x 12 or something huge like that. I would definitely recommend her. If you can get more people involved she might make the costs cheaper (well the airfare would be...and to chch would be cheaper than cromwell)

I was just going to second Sarah. We flew her down to Wellington when we found some bargain airfares and she is just so darn cheap compared to anything else I have seen. From memory, excluding airfares, I think we paid $150 which included sitting (and all her equipment), 50 - 75 photos on CD for you to do with what you wanted, and 3 enormous photos (so enormous in fact that they're a little too big.... you might want to consider getting yours printed in a smaller size as we probably won't frame them).

The photos were fabulous too. If you search the photography forum for "Momentz" you will probably find a heap of her photos, lots of OhBaby members have used her.

Her website is www.momentz.co.nz. She's also a forum member but I can't remember her handle, sorry.

Oh, and your experience is not uncommon. It's amazing how many of my friends "won" a free sitting when we entered the competitions at the Parent and Child Show. Seems we were all incredibly lucky to "win" - what are the chances of that?!?

But yes, "free" sitting, and totally outrageous print costs. It's basically a scam!

What extras do you have to pay with Sarah? Excluding airfares, do you have to pay for accommodation?

Yeah, I don't know where they get off, I mean my wedding photographer only cost $900 and that included prints AND I got to keep the CD of photos!

would totally recommend Sarah. Very reasonable (you get approx 50 photos for $150plus travel costs) all on CD so you can print off what size you want and how many you want. Will be getting her to do another family one when this baby arrives

That is ridiculous!

I just had photo's done with Bernadette Peters in PN & her 6x4 framed is $120 so they have to be ripping you off. I don't know what her sitting fee is because she was taking the pics to replace all her studio/gallery pics

I got an awesome deal off her & can't wait to pay for it to be done & it's $350 for a framed print which has one big photo & 3 smaller ones down the side, it's a 20x something , plus I get my one free 5x7 & she's throwing in 11 prints on CD for me. The CD isn't usual I think.
