Hi everyone,

I've just signed up today so this is my first post, yah! I'm 32 years old and my husband and I live in Auckland. 6 weeks ago my husband and I decided we'd come off contraception and start trying for a baby.

Expecting things to take a while, I was gob smacked to see 2 red lines on the pregnancy test last week after trying for the first time. Very very lucky and very excited to say the least!

By my calculations, I think I'm just coming into week 5 (period was due 5 days ago but is a no show). We're going to see the Dr tomorrow for the first time and I guess I wanted to check with you all to see what you all did at this stage as we have no idea how this whole thing works and haven't told anyone about the positive test ... any advice / suggestions??

Hi Pants,
I did the same as you. I went to the doc and he sent me for bloods to confirm, and check my levels of rubella immunisation etc. Once I got my results back from this, I hit the phones and started meeting a selection of mw's. Highly reccommend you do the same - the earlier you get started the higher the likelihood you'll find someone you want to work with.

Good luck!

Thanks Claire - good advice on the MW. Did you have any early pregnancy symptoms? The room spun and I almost fainted 2 weeks and had a similar (although not as dramatic) thing happen yesterday but aside from this .. nothing

Yeah Pants, I had quite a bit. Biggest sign was that my boobs grew two cup sizes in about 2 weeks. But also the lightheadedness, peeing more often, hungry like I couldn't believe, and tired.

Don't worry too much about the symptoms, some have heaps and others have none at all. I'd say go and get those bloods done and remember if a girl isn't pregnant levels are less than 5 (2 for me), a big difference to the 517 I had the day after my AF was due.

congradulation hun!!! I would recommend finding a midwife asap too - not sure what its like in auckland but down here there is quite a shortage and they fill up fast. Your dr may have a list of recommendations so might be worth asking them too. Meet a few different ones as its really important that you (and your husband as he has to work with her while you're in labour) click and feel comfortable with them. Good luck hun. Oh and you may want to join the due in _______ thread (sorry preggy brain it wont work out what month you're due). That way you can chat to others who are at the same point as you

Thanks Angel, as soon as I find out due date I'll get it up there

Claire, I'm really sorry but what does ... "if a girl isn't pregnant levels are less than 5 (2 for me), a big difference to the 517 I had the day after my AF was due". .... mean?

Sorry, I'll figure things out as I go alone but a real novice at the moment

Before you get pregnant we all have an hcg level (the preggie hormone) usually a level between 0 and 5, mine was 2.

When you get pregnant it goes up fairly quickly and alot. Mine was 517 the day after my period was due.

Don't be sorry hun, we've all been there - and I'm happy to help x

Oh wow thanks guys, that's so nice! We're renting in St heliers but expect to be in the same place for a while. I assume you get a mw who's local? How do you choose one? I mean I'm sure the Dr will have suggestions but do you just call around and ask a few questions then choose who you like the most?

It may sound silly but I'd like someone a little older, who has been around for a while. I'm 32 so no spring chicken and dont think I'd enjoy having a mw who's a lot younger then me

My midwife, Linda Trillo, was absolutely awesome... I'm in mt albert though, and linda is based out of greenwoods corner, so she may not suit. Just want to give her a plug cos I love her!

and congrats, I'm only lurking in pregnancy cos i remember how exciting it was and wanted to reminisce while one hand typing with little dude feeding!

Your GP will have a list of local midwives, and yes it pays to get in early in Auckland. I was lucky with my midwife as she took me on at 10 weeks when most book out around 5-6 weeks

Thanks everyone!
Popped to the Dr today with the Husband and told I'm about 4.5 weeks, so pretty early really. I thought it would be far too early to get onto midwives but we're going to start making some calls over the next week. I might post in here somewhere too to see if there are any recommendations in St Heliers

PS - why does everyone go for the giraffe??

Congrats chic Awesome job on the ultra fast baby making. Definitely not to early to start calling midwives. The earlier the better if you want to find someone you gel with. I would go in with a basic game plan. Consider what kind of birth and care you want. When it comes to a midwife do you want someone who will be direct and clinical or someone that will be more intimate and fully involved. Also what kind of birth do you want. I wanted a c/section for my twins and wanted someone clinical that just presented me with facts and figures. But maybe you want a home birth or a natural drug free birth. Maybe you want someone that will be excited with you and play more of a mother hen role. There are so many different midwives with different preferences. My MIL is a full on hippy midwife into water births and totally drug free. If you can go in and give the midwife a basic idea of what you have in mind for your journey you'll be able to gage right from the beginning whether she will fit the bill or not.

Best of luck chic

Congrats, well done being first time lucky! Bit of a shock though haha.

Linda Trillo and her back up Jan are both awesome. Had heaps of recommendations for them but they are away when i'm due for this one. I think they have clinics at a few places but not sure. They are part of Parnell midwives i think.

Otherwise just phone around.
