    Posted: 03 October 2006 at 6:32pm
I've had a really sore, bruised feeling in my boob since last night and am feeling quite sick in myself.

I've been massaging like crazy and feeding Ben off it till it feels really empty but I'm just feeling worse and worse.

I will go to the doc for antibiotics tomorrow but until then, is there anything anyone can reccomend other than panadol to help ease it up?

TIA

I had mastitis with Taine and sorry - the only thing that cleared it up were anti-biotics. My midwife said she could prescribe them for me free

If you're in pain with it (sounds like it) then Panadol is really the only thing that'll ease that in the meantime - well that's what I found anyway.

Actually a heat pack eases the pain a bit too.

heat packs are good, try to massage it off in the shower etc, and try to feed off that side with Ben lying so that hopefully if possible his chin is against the spot with the lump (unless it's right up the top..away from the nipple lol) If you have a breast pump you could always continue to express off the other side and get ben feeding from the affected one and ensure it's drained.. or express after you have fed to ensure it's drained.. but yeah, Panadol, and make sure you get to those docs quick smart it's probably getting a bit late at this stage to go off to a doc really unless you have afterhours which costs a bomb, but be careful cos it can get bad very quickly.. If i remember rightly, Emma ende dup in hospital, and i know quite a few women do..

Try massaging while feeding.. ie heat packs before feeds to soften it, massage the lump while feeding him from it, and again after feeding him with some heat again or in the shower (not always convenient but neither is mastitis.. ow)

Be careful with the cabbage leaves.. I cannot remember exactly.. but while they are good to relieve engorgement and are nice and cool when refridgerated.. long term or used too much can result in the chemicals/enzymes/whatever it is, in them.. can dry up your milk.

I would personally get to a Dr asap- even if it is after hours! I had mastitis 3 times and you have to get antibiotics really quickly before you wind up having to go into hospital which you DO NOT want to do. It gets to the point which you can't actually move- you feel like you have the worst flu imaginable and your temp skyrockets because of the infection.

Like the other have said- heat packs and try to make sure your breasts are getting fully emptied. Get to the DR!!!

Thanks Everyone!
I couldn't stand it anymore so Hubby took me off to A&E. So lots of money later I have the antibiotics.
Feeling so sick, hopefully they work fast!
The things we Mummies go through huh?

Aww I had it four times and didn't want anitbiotics.. probably got it back that many times as I didn't take them Luckily never ended up in hospital though!
The first two times I felt like I had the flu, but the other two I managed to clear it really quickly by massaging the lump, putting it under hot water in the shower, holding a heat pack on it at night.. not wearing my breastfeeding bra (that's important!) too tight and not at all when you have the infection. Take a 1000mg vitamin c tablet each day until the infection clears.. this does help! get some from the supermarket or chemist.

Hugs CaraMel! I hope th antbiotics clears it up soon but I am soooo glad that hubby took you to the docs - I woke up one morning with a red patch on my boob, by lunchtime I was pretty sick and the midwife had faxed thru a prescription, and within 2 hours I was in hospital hallucinating from fever. So things really can happen that quickly.

I ended up with a lovely 9 night stay at National Womens

when sebby was a newborn i had a massive crack in my nipple..more like a hole half the size of my nipple really..tmi? anyways that got extremely infected and spread pretty much all over my breast, i had an awful fever so bad that i was almost unconcious and poaring with sweat,it honestly felt like i was dying! my mums a homoeopathic and she told me to take the remedie Belladonna, which cleared the fever up in less than half an hour after taking the first dose! i'm actually kind of skeptical when it comes to homoeopathy but that converted me!

i really didnt want to take antibiotics so i just kept soaking it in hot water and massaging it and making sure it got drained every time seb fed on it even though that hurt like hell! but it cleared up in a couple of weeks.
