    Posted: 04 March 2009 at 11:17am
My baby and I are off to Melbourne in April for a wedding, so I need to get her passport organised! I tried taking a few photos when she was looking at the camera, are any of these suitable? (I will get someone to make the background white if any of them are useable)

From the Internal Affairs Website:

Photographs
All applicants, including babies, must provide two identical photos of themselves. Both photos must be the same in all ways taking care they are not damaged by staples, pins, paperclips, folding or ink.

The photos must be:
Recent photos, less than six months old.

A full-front view of face, head and shoulders, looking straight at the camera with eyes open and head straight.

Without hat, head band or head covering. If you wear these for religious or medical reasons, please state the reason on the Statutory Declaration on page 13 of the passport application form.

In all cases, facial features from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead and both edges of the face must be clearly shown.

Without sunglasses. Tinted prescription glasses may be worn as long as the eyes are still visible. There must be no light reflection on the glasses. Thick or heavy rimmed frames must be removed.

A true image and not altered in any way.

Clear, sharp and in focus with minimum reflective light on the face.

With a plain, light coloured background (not white or dark) and no background shadow.

Of high quality colour showing natural skin tones (black and white photos are not acceptable), with a strong definition between your image and the background.

Printed on high quality photographic paper of high resolution, instant colour film or low gloss coated thermal papers providing the printers are high resolution printing systems.

Not printed with ink jet printers, on extremely high gloss paper or heavily backed thermal paper.

Taken with a neutral expression with the mouth closed.

With eyes open and clearly visible, and no hair across the face or eyes.

Actual photo size of 45mm height x 35mm width.

Head size a maximum 80% of the photo (36mm)/minimum 70% of the photo (32mm).

I would say #3 is best but it says on the W/S that it isn't to be altered in any way, assume this includes background?

Good Luck!! I was originally going to post that I didn't think under 2's needed a passport if travelling with legal guardians, but can't find any info on that...

Nope none of those would be considered usable because her head is turned side on from her body and she's not got a plain light background behind her.

You'd need to kneel directly above her with her on her back and have her looking straight up at you and you'd need to lay a light coloured sheet under her.

Also you need to have her shoulders and head taking up more of the shot - but I guess you could crop that although you might run into problems when it comes to printing it to correct size.

Otherwise check around you local pharmacies - some of them are well practiced at taking passport shots of babies.

to add to Bobbie's post..

Take her to a pharmacy, with a white cloth/sheet to lay her on. They're boud to have floor space for you to lay her down on while they take the shot.

OT - she's so cute

Thanks ladies, great advice! I just put her on a light green blanket and took a closer-up one. Not sure it's straight enough still, if not I'll take her to a pharmacy and let the professionals have a go hehe

oh she's so cute.

Yip I agree with the others, I went to the chemist & they put baby on a white blanket on the floor & took the photo, only took a few mins. Have fun on your trip.

I just got mine done and it was way easier than I thought, popped into a camera shop, 3 takes, $15 and we were done, plus they were so friendly it was all good.

Just make sure, she is fed, not too tired and it'll be good. They are so used to doing it, its much easier.

I know they say that its not meant to be altered in anyway but I do know a camera shop here in Auck that does it and she gets you to hold the baby in the crook of your arm and takes it and photoshops anything out like your fingers or if the head is slightly tilted.

Also you can get a few done and take them into internal affairs if your worried and they will be able to advise I have heard

Rianna I went to Rabbit photo in the Queen St Mall and they had a little white bean bag thing that they leaned Daniel on for the background. They also had a digital camera (some post offices and pharmacies still have the polaroid style) so they took about 10 photos and then used the best one.

Make sure you get on to applying for Jacksons citizenship and passport asap as Im still waiting for Daniels and I applied in August!!!

Excellent thanks Carrie! Yeah I had to wait for stupid QLD govt to send his birth certificate it only arrived yesterday after waiting 4 weeks

Did you send both applications together at the same time or did you have to send Daniel's citizenship first then do his passport??
