Topic: Snow Posted: 05 October 2009 at 2:19pm |
We got trapped last night with the snow. Coming back home from Palmy we got stuck in Taihape for the night. Us and about 200 odd others (about 50% of them were army people as well - we had 2 courses starting today and lots of people away) were stopped. We were lucky we have family in Taihape that put us up for the night. Got through the road up to home at about 12.30. So glad to be home it is like a blizzard out there now, but I have my fires going to keep us warm.
Photos to come once I can get them taken.

My brother was on his way to Auckland to come home for a few days and his car got hit by a couple of boulder things that rolled down off a cliff, luckily he was ok! But I think him and his mates got stuck in taihape aswell.
His car is ok aswell thank goodness!

We had snow on State Highway 1 between Atiamuri and Taupo - and quite a bit of it. It was settling on the road and was all over the hills. I've never seen snow there before. And sleet in Taupo! Insane.

I'm supposed to be going to Turangi tomorrow...wonder if I bother!
I only remember snow settling in Turangi a few times in my life.

You might struggle to get there aliasmum, the dessert road is closed between taihape and waiouru this morning, and so is SH49 between waiouru and ohakune.
Thinking you guys becks, hope you are stocked up.
At least if you get snowed in, the Army can dig you out.

Hmmm might flag the idea, bugger cause Mum & Dad are going to be back at their place in Turangi today so was looking forward to some pampering (breakfast in bed )plus skiing tomorrow.
I hate the parapara's so not going up that way. Too many memories of being sick as a kid

I had to take DP to work just past Ruapheu this morning and the road was open between National Park and Turangi. It was looking pretty all in white and there was still snow falling in some places.
And there were cars and trucks heading towards Ohakune so the road must be open that way.

49 has remained open but 1 was clased from Rangipo to Taihape so if you wanted to go north or south you had to do the parapara's. Still snowing we went for a walk down the main road and got caught in it.
All stocked up here, we went shopping while we were down in Palmy so won't run out of things in a while. Bread seems to be the biggest thing people are running out of and we can't get bread deliveries here so the cop went over to Ohakune yesterday and got a whole heap for the locals.
We have about 50cm of snow on the ground here, so all my plans to go away with Andrew are gone.
