Topic: Applying for jobs Posted: 09 November 2009 at 8:02am |
I've been looking for a job for a few months now, and recently I found out I'm pregnant.
I know I have no legal requirements to tell them I am pregnant, although I think I will just to keep the air clear (even though it could affect my chances of actually getting the job.. Which legally isn't right, but who's gonna stop them.)
But what kind of leave am I eligible for? EG maternity leave? How long? I'd guess it's unpaid if not, then how much is paid?... What about other leave, for scans etc?
I've tried having a look online but most stuff for maternity leave only really refers to people who have been working there for a while (unless I'm totally missing something here...)

Yeah I think you're only eligible for maternity leave if you've been working there for a year so might pay to leave the job searching til after baby arrives - specially if you're thinking about being a SAHM at all.

You won't recieve maternity leave or paid parental leave unless you have been in a job for more then 12 months - but you will get tax credits from IRD to help with the new baby.

Will I still get tax credits if I don't get a job?? What tax credits do I get? Someone said I should get like $1000 from something... Where from and whats it for?
I'm looking for a job, just to help boost our income for a wee while as we've just bought a house etc and with me being pregnant, theres a few extra things we wanna do (basically the more i earn the quicker we can do it and the easier it'll be, although we can do it on DF wages we'll have to budget moreso)
I am planning on being a SAHM, it's what we've always agreed on... But I've been looking for a job for months so it seems funny NOT looking for a job just because I'm pregnant, kinda feels a bit lazy IYKWIM??

I thought you were entitiled to a smaller amount of PPL if you had been in a job for 6mths, which could be cutting it a little fine. I think if you don't get the PPL or a job then your DH will be able to the tax credit. Try giving IRD a call and checking all the possible scenarios with them

You could try to find a fixed term position? You do have to be working in a job for 6 months in order to be eligible for PPL (and you have to be intending to return, although there are ways around that!!) for 14 weeks. You aren't entitled to the extended maternity leave however - for that you need to be in a job for 12 months.

It's hard enough finding a job let alone being fussy about if its a fixed term or not lol... Unfortunately most fixed terms are for one year... I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed that something pops up...
I think DF will earn too much for us even to get any benefits or anything.... Might still look into that though, It might be a little bit extra towards stuff, every bit will help at the moment...
Does it matter how much he's earning to get the tax credit? What is it.. Literally a tax credit where he gets some tax back?

Check out the Dept of Labour website Linky
You are eligible for 14 weeks PPL is you have been working more than 10 hours a week for the same firm for 6 months before you due date.
You are eligible for 14 weeks PPL and a further 32 weeks unpaid if you have been in the same job for 12 months by your due date.
So yes you could potentially start in a new job and still qualify for PPL. It its fixed term and the term finishes before PPL is up you would get a reduced amount.
I've been job hunting this past year and have looked into into carefully JIC I managed to get pregnant.

Here is some information...
Parental Tax Credit
You can also look at Working for Families which has a calculator so that you can check to see if you are entitled to anything.

Here's the page from DOL
Entitlement You are entitled to (unpaid) statutory parental leave of:
* special leave (up to 10 days during your pregnancy e.g. for doctor visits)
* maternity leave (up to 14 weeks - up to 6 before the birth and the balance of the 14 weeks after the birth).
If you choose to take parental leave, you are entitled to the statutory parental leave payment. Your payment will be $429.74 per week before tax. This will be paid from the start of your parental leave until the earlier of the following:
* the end of 14 weeks; or
* the date you return to work; or
* if you resign, the date you resign.
If you choose to transfer payments to your partner, then you will need to choose how many of the 14 weeks you want to receive payments for - your partner will be eligible for payments for the balance of the 14 weeks.

Yip, wat mrsg said.
I started my current job in july and will have been there 6 months and 1 weeks when baby is due so luckily I just squeezed in to be eligible for paid maternity leave (14 weeks). The only difference is the unpaid leave is only 6 months, not 1 year.
As long as you start 6 months before baby is due (needs to be confirmed by a scan) you will receive the same entitlements.

Hi, When i applied for my current job i didnt realize i was pregnant. I would have been like 3 weeks, then i found out, waited untill 12 weeks and told my manager. He was an ass. But thats just him. I stayed until i was 38 weeks and had my daughter a couple days later.
I got 14 week PPL from IRD. You only have to be there 6 months to qualify. I returned to work when DD was 7 months old, and am still there now. You get better benefits if you have been working there for 12 months though.

I live down south.. (a few hours drive from Chch) There really isn't a lot down here... There is more coming up but not that much still... I'm registered with a few temp companys but they've made it clear they have waaay more people registered than jobs coming up. They rung me for one job but there was no way I'd be able to do it (it was such heavy lifting, eg 20kgs at a time, all day) and I said no, so since then it's kinda like they bumped me to the bottom of the list cos I said no...
Anyone know what happens when you've worked there for less than 6months and bub is due?

There is a calculator on the DOL website where you can work out what your entitlement is.
Even if you don't qualify for PPL you may still be eligible for tax credits.

Hey HB i'm in a similar situation.
Being a uni student i had organised summer work b4 i realised i was pregnant. Went to see the boss yesterday to confirm hours for summer and decided not to tell him i was preggers. I was afraid he'd wouldn't give me a job. So i am on a fixed term contract until march when he thinks i'm going back to uni. By march i will be nearly 5 mouths preggers.
I plan to tell work at new years that i'm pregnant and ask for the work to be extended a few months if possible. I'm not doing this to try and be eligible for paid leave, (though that would be a good bonus). I'm doing it, because, like you we need the extra cash so we can have lots of money saved up for when bubs arrives. Also so we can have great baby gear shopping sprees.

I have found that i am also in the same predicament.
I have been out of work since the end of August and have just been successful at scoring a new job - at the same time I have also found out I am 7 weeks pregant. We are over the moon as we were planning but werent sure how long it would take so i contintued job searching for full time roles.
I have accepted the role which is a temp 9month appx position and have not advised my new employer of my pregnancy- It has taken so long to get a job and as we have just bought a house we could do with the extra salary.
I am planning to be a SAHM so the maternity leave and support is not an issue for me anyway seeing as my role is temporary. I am feeling guilty however taking the role on knowing that I may not be able to complete the employment term and for not telling my new employer. Its has been bit of a dilema deciding whether to tell them or not - but at the same time i fear that they will turn me down and i will be even further down the pregancy by the time I get any futher offers.
Am I doing the right thing? Or am I being disrespectful to my new employers?

I dont think they will be annoyed with you newkiwi, especially as it is a short term contract. You will be able to work the majority of it, and if they still need someone Im sure they will be able to find someone to cover the last few months.
Same to Baygirl - it shouldnt make any difference to your new employers at all. Hopefully they will be able to extend your contract.
