My DD decided to dunk my cell phone up and down several times in a cold cup of tea (my fault - shouldn't have left my phone in such a low position, but she didn't have to have such a grin on her face while she did it)

I took the phone back to the shop who sent it off, and it came back as 'moisture damage' so they wont fix it, invalidated warranty, and it is beyond repair in any case.

I have checked our contents insurance and I think it should be covered under 'accidental damage' but I am not sure.

Has anyone claimed for such damage before, when it has been caused in such a way? what do i tell my insurance company? Is baby-led damage 'accidental'?

Yep my cousins (11 months apart and utter horrors) dunked my auntys phone in her coffee, dropped it in the toilet, peed on it (not in the toilet), dunked it n her coffee again and buried it alive. All different phones BTW. Insurance people covered it fine.
The same boys stuffed the brandnew dvd player/surround sound stereo full of as many CDs as they could get their hands on not once, not twice but THREE times and the insurance people covered it all.
I'd have hated to be their insurance company

Yeah my cellphone was drowned twice and insurance have replace it both times.

Although my phone was five times my excess, so it was worth it .. i wouldnt bother if i had a cheap(ish) phone.

thanks - sounds hopeful. Phone is worth $400 and excess is $150 so should be worth it.

Is it likely to affect my premiums when it comes to renewal do you know?

Hmm, it might affect your premiums. You usually lose your no-claims bonus, so premiums are likely to go up. Depends on your policy and if you have a max no claims bonus for life (these types of polices are not the norm where contents are concerned).

It possibly will affect your premiums, just ring your insurance company and check, you don't have to go through with the claim if you decide it isn't worth it.

I had a similar thing recently when my puppy ate my glasses I told the insurance company what happened and they were fine about it, I just had to pay $250 excess and it didn't affect my no claims bonus as it was the first time that we had claimed.

When my darling son pushed my laptop off the table and killed it, my insurance company paid out no problems. They have also paid out for glasses (which didnt have an excess). It hasnt affected our premiums at all.  My glasses are stuffed again from toddler abuse, so may need to claim again!!!

$150 is good for excess, your premium goes up the lower your excess is. $250 is usually about standard.

ETA - there are a number of reasons why excess varies not just premum price.

State replaced my laptop when Maya tipped a glass of water over on the keyboard and munted it, and they replaced the screen on the replacement laptop when I cracked it by picking it up by the screen.

My premiums have gone up as a result tho. I must call around and get quotes from other companies coz I'm sure I'm getting overcharged.

Our premiums only go up if we claim twice in an insurance year.

Oh and if you're with State, be prepared that your excess will prob go up to $250 now if it hasn't already, plus premiums are going up by quite a bit too.

We got 3 rooms carpeted thanks to DS having diarrhoea (we both had gastro, I ran him to the lino to try and minimise the damage (it was running out his nappy) but there was no way the professional carpet cleaners could fix it). Needless to say now we have a darker coloured carpet to avoid that type of staining happening

The excesses and premiums vary depending on the company. Pretty much ALL insurance companies have put their premiums up this year, some by up to 40%, so combine that with any loss of no claims bonus, and things can get kind of hefty. I'm not looking forward to shopping around at the next renewal We're with Vero and our excess is $150 (standard).
