Have any of you breastfeeding mums had to have a colonoscopy? I am having one next Friday, I am supposed to have them every 2 years and this one is already 9 months late as I was pregnant when it was due, I can't really put it off any longer.

My surgeon assures me it is fine to have one while breastfeeding, but I'm still a tiny bit concerned about how the fasting, laxatives and sedatives will affect my milk. We haven't been able to get Abby to take a bottle either so I will have to feed her as soon as I get home from the hospital.

It would be nice to hear from some mums who have 'been there, done that' or at least know someone who has.

Hi
I haven't had a colonoscopy, but I did have surgery to have my gall bladder removed when my son was 6 weeks old. I was first on the list in the morning, DF came to the hospital with me and Sebastian. I fed him before I went into surgery and DF took him home for the day. DF fed him expressed breast milk. Prior to that Sebastian had only tried a bottle once, but according to DF took the bottles from him without problem.

After surgery I had to pump and dump twice on recommendation from the doctors so the drugs given to me weren't passed onto Sebastian. DF brought Sebastian back to the hospital to be with me that night.

Prior to surgery I had been admitted to hospital three times with gall stone pain. During those times I was given a cocktail of different drugs. They were very cautious giving me morphine as it passes though to breastmilk, but at times I had to have it. I don't think it had any noticeable effect on Sebastian.

Good luck, I hope all goes well for you.

It will be hard on your body but absolutely fine for baby.
You could maybe ask them to put an IV in while you are doing the fasting so that you get fluids if you are not allowed to drink (I can't remember if I was allowed to drink clear fluids or not).
Make sure you eat well afterwards to help relieve the drain on your body.

Hey, thanks for your replies. I know I should trust the surgeon but it's hard not to worry a bit.

I am allowed clear fluids until 2 hours before getting to the hospital so I will make sure I stay well hydrated. I have to get up at 4am to take the second lot of laxatives

I have enough expressed milk in the freezer for about 3 feeds, just in case there is a reason I can't feed her. Hopefully if she is hungry enough she will take the bottle from DH!
