Topic: Car capsule advice Posted: 23 December 2009 at 7:25pm |
I'm sure this has been asked before but my brain has melted and I can't bear to do a search. Anyway, here are my questions.....
I got boyfriend to have a quick look around at hiring one, and it seems that it'd cost $160 odd dollars to hire for a year. Does this sound right?
How long do the babies stay in the capsule? I know that they take up to 13kg but do they really need to be in a capsule this long?
We'd like a snap in base. How do these attach to the car - do I need anchors or do these fix in place using the seatbelt?
Any other capsule tips/advice?

13kg?!! You must be talking about a convertible car seat which can be used from birth to 13kg. My 3yr old is only just 13kg!
You can hire capsules and car seats through plunket. They also help to fit carseats that u buy too, so you get it right.
You wont need a anchor bolt with a capsule, whether it has a base or not, it is attatched with the car seat belt. If u use a convertible carseat- ie a carseat that can be used from new born, then becomes more upright as child grows, then u will need an achor bolt. You will need one once baby moves out of capsule to normal carseat too.
Ph your local plunket- some plunkets will be able to tell u which garage to go to to get bolt fitted cheaper, or u can do it yourself. It pays to get one on each side of your car so u can take another child like if u go out with a friend etc,..plus kids have to be in somesort of car restrait until they like 38kgs now!
If u gonna buy any capsule or carseat- get the shop assistant to go to your car with you and make sure it fits first, then get them to show u how to put it in after u buy it!
They also have a 10 yr expirey date on them, and also should be replaced if in any sort of accident as they can be weakened- so be careful when buying secondhand.

you wont need to hire a capsule for a year, i think 6 months at the most possibly...
capsules dont tether...and i dont think that rear facing seats do, but will need to be tethered when they go front facing... but if you get a good seat that will rear face longer you will be better off.
with regard to capsules you can buy the ex hire ones from places like baby factory too, i think mine cost me $50 to buy.

As the others have said, you only need a capsule for the first 6months (or longer if you have a tiny baby like mine).
The 13kg thing is a bit of a have. Yes, the carseat maybe able to hold this weight, but they also have a height restriction which is usually around 67-70cms. This is about the average height of a 5-6month old whereas 13kg is around the weight of an average 2 year old. I don't know why the carseat makers always state the weight restriction when realistically all babies are going to hit the height restriction first. It really annoys me everytime I see a baby in a capsule they are far to big for...

My capsule went up to 13 kg but my baby out grew it much earlier as they can't stay in them once they get too long either. My first was in it until about 10 months (he was very short) and my second until about 6-7 months. They also get incredibly heavy to carry,
I would say if you hire you would only do so for 6 months. If you are thinking of having more than one child I would look at buying one, ours cost $130 so was worth it for the amount time we used it and we then sold it for $50.
When you move baby out of capsule please please please do continue to rear face till at least 12 months, so many think they can just sit forward and it's so dangerous.

Hi Sasha,
Make sure you try the capsule in your car, we orginally were going to go with a phil and teds, but our seatbelt is too short, so it wont go around the capsule. So we have to get a base. Also is the capsule going to go in other peoples cars? As if your seatbelt is long enough, other peoples seatbelts might not be.
Like others said, the base is seatbelted in. But there is one or two that are anchored in, but these are for capsules, that are expensive, ie $400.
So far the cheapest capsule and base I have found is the milano, from baby city. At about $220 all up.
Otherwise you are looking at about 280-350 from other places. The other one is the safety 1st you can get from babyfactory, its about 300, but you can get cheaper off internet baby shops (just try first at babyfactory). This has a base leveler, which if your seats tilt, like mine do, with the milano, you'd have to put a towel under it. Sounds confusing, but you'll understand once your try.
Then you can confuse yourself about wheather you want side protection foam, 3 point or 5 point harness. Nothing is simple!
Good luck!

We have bought a Graco from Baby on the Move. This is one of the few capsules that fit up to approx one year (depending how fast your child grows!), so we can delay buying the next size up for a wee while hopefully. We worked out that hiring for a year for two kids (another one one day!) vs buying, it would be more beneficial to buy for this particular one.
It has a base and is also compatible with Snap n Go Wheels, so we bought that aswell.

We have a capsule that goes up to 13.5kg and 76cm. Callum still fits in it because his head doesn't reach the top, it's just his loooong legs hanging over the bottom (Yes, he would probably be safer in a convertible car seat now but we don't have a car and so need something that goes into a taxi quickly - we live in Singapore. Car seats aren't actually compulsory )
Anyhoo, we're still using our capsule at 12m and C isn't a small baby by any stretch of the imagination. I know other mum's in NZ using capsules at 9-10mo and their bubs are smaller than C, it really does depend on how big your baby is!
We've got a Peg Perego Primo Viaggo with Iso-Fix base but we don't use the base here. We will for subsequent babies if we move home though.
