Topic: Birthcare Posted: 15 January 2010 at 8:38pm |
Long way off but it's had me wondering ...
I know at Birthcare you're only there for 3 nights, after that you have to pay. What if you need to stay for medical reasons (not yet established BF is a reason in most hospitals for an extended length of stay)? Anyone had any experience?
It came from an article by Kathy Fray I was reading who suggested staying in hospital till your milk came in. Last time, mine came in on day 6. I'm not convinced that I want to stay in hospital that long but I can see the wisdom in staying long enough to get feeding sorted (and possibly the worst of the hormones through the system before going home to a toddler).

Flissty I ended up staying for 4 nights (might have been 5) because I had such problems with feeding and under medical advice they thought it best that I stay - if we had been in a shared room then I would have been able to stay for free, but as we were in a private room we were able to stay on at the subsidised rate (hope that make sense!)

You can stay for five days in special circumstances
For example if you have a cs, you can stay longer, so you may stay two nights at hospital but they give you another three in birthcare.
Also I was told that if you are having problems you can stay (eg you are having feeding issues)

I'm curious too - seems there's been a lot of talk of babies from you of late Fliss .
I had 4 nights free with the gremlins as they weren't feeding well and 4 nights with lil miss coz she had to go on the bili bed. I was all dressed ready to go home on day 3 and then her bloods came back and we had to stay.

I was in a single room (as I gave birth there) and I stayed four nights for free as my left (.) was as hard as a rock and so sore it wasnt funny, the on duty midwife said there was no way she was going to let me go home!! If they hadnt have been able to get it sorted I would have been able to stay another night free too.

Do the free days alter seeing as we're in the Waitemata DHB?
(and no, no news here either ). Although given how Fliss & my coffee group are going, 2nd babies are contagious right now!

It's free if you birth at ACH (and after my birth experience, I'm wondering about going there instead - bad memories of Waitak). If you birth at Waitak and transfer, you pay. BUT, if you birth at Waitak, you can transfer to Helensville for 3 nights for free.
Mel, nope, most birthing centres won't allow a VBAC because it's considered too high risk. Weegee might know more - I think she was looking at whether Helensville could be persuaded to let her do a VBAC there.

I don't know, haven't had that battle yet I suspect if they do it is very much on a case by case basis! It might be different at Birthcare cos it's so close to ACH? A much shorter ambulance trip than Helensville to Waitak anyway.
