Topic: Weaning from the wrap Posted: 20 January 2010 at 7:51am |
OK I know that there are already threads on this, gosh I have even offered advice but this time it is a little different.
Ben was wrapped from birth but we weaned at probably 3/4mths as I had had enough plus he was side sleeping in a wedge and it was a pain. I then started noticing that he was only having 3x30min naps a day which wasn't long enough. At about 4.5/5mths I started wrapping again and he went back to having great naps
A few weeks ago I checked him before going to bed and he had moved down the cot, was on his side with legs thru the bars and the wrap bunched around his neck! I weaned cold turkey that night and he didn't wake more than nomal. The next day I wrapped with one arm out and he wouldn't self settle (not a major but annoying) and would only sleep 30-45min each nap so I went back to wrapping again and naps improved.
Last night I found him twice with his wrap bunched around his neck! I was going to try again in Feb as we are away next week but looks like I have to make changes sooner . Makes it harder as I am not in the right frame of mind to make changes, I am tired (well that is a constant ) and with this heat I have little paitence plus Ben is teething!
So what do I do? Cold turkey or slow weaning (one arm out, then the next)? And will his naps improve and how long will it take?
Oh and sorry for the rant!
ETA: oh and are they ever ready to be weaned from the wrap or do you have to "make" them? I never had any problems getting rid of Jack's

We used a pekemoe which is a bit like a pillowcase with a neckband and a zip at the bottom. The still feel secure because their arms are inside.
Hope this helps.

I was going to suggest a Pekemoe We don't have one but it's done the trick for lots of our March mammas.
I would imagine weaning from the wrap will be different for every baby. DD just didn't want one from about 12wks, my friend still wraps her 1yr old
Hope you find something that works Linzy and I hope your trip away means you'll get a bit of well-deserved rest

a pekemoe sounds really good if he's used to having his arms enclosed, i've never heard of it but it sounds like a good idea.
when i weaned my kids off the wrap, i went to a sleep sack but instead of putting their arms out i just zipped them up inside the sack for a while and then after they got used to that they just started finding the arm holes themselves in the night and i'd wake up in the morning to find their arms out anyway.
good luck with whatever you try.

We made a "pekemoe" out of a pillowcase... cut a neck hole in the top, stitched some polarfleece around as a neck band and around the bottom to lengthen and add a a drawstring.
Cost - one pillowcase = $4 or so, 40cm polar fleece = $2 on sale, 1/2 an hour time! Actually, my ones were free, I had spare of everything needed.

It sounds like the homemade pekemoe might be the way to go Linzy.
I've just recently weaned DS from his wrap for the same reason, it was bunching up around his face and neck. TBH It was happening for ages but not at every sleep and wasn't bunching while he was asleep so I felt safe knowing that he was awake and would eventually cry any way (plus I'd always listen to him talking to himself and the moment it sounded muffled, I'd go in).
Anyway, I had to buy a safety sleep because he'd roll all over the cot and not settle without the wrap. Once I had the safety sleep, we did one arm out for a week and then took away the wrap altogether and it's worked a treat. I think it took him a day or so to get used to having one arm out but I did it on the weekend when DH was home.
Good luck - I hope it goes as smoothly for you.

I'm wondering this too in the heat....might give the pillow case idea a try.
We have had one arm unwrapped for months but haven't progressed any further!

Thanks for that ladies. MIL is up here next week and we have a day at home between holiday venues so may get her to run one up for me as I doubt I will have time.
Can they still get their hands to their mouths? I think this is what wakes Ben when he is unwrapped.
Have wrapped him with one arm out tonight, hope that goes ok. Have kept wrapping him during the day for now and just checking on him periodically to make sure the wrap is till in place

Another vote for the pekemoe here (and we've only had it for one night so far )
They can get their hands to their mouth but will be sucking the cloth iygwim?

We've just gone cold turkey here as DD2 has started rolling over in bed, so now she just has a run of the mill sleeping bag on over her singlet - I couldn't be arsed with the safety sleep. So far so good, at least for last night - 8:30pm to 7am!

great to hear so many babies are enjoying their Peke Moe. :)
Yes Linzy they can get their hands up to their mouths, but this doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.
Just a reminder that any baby sleepwear has to align to NZ/AU safety standards, which the Peke Moe does! :)
All the best!

Will have a think about it then as he seems to wake himself when he can get his hands to his mouth.

DD would wake herself scratching at her eyes. She could still reach them, but it wasn't the same, so it didn't wake her as much (actually at all, the first time she was in it we had a 2.5 hour sleep, first one in weeks!)

OK so I ended up running one up sort of like SquishysMum said but was too lazy to do the drawstring so just put a dome in at the crotch so it doesn't move. He has been asleep nearly 1.5hrs which is great at anytime but considering he is unwrapped as such it is brilliant.
Thanks heaps ladies for your help!
