I think for an obstetrician it's roughly $3,000-$4,000 p/pregnancy if you're going private, if you choose to go through the public system you don't need to pay for the specialist as far as I know ...but personally when it comes to your situation i'd be going privately if i could afford.

My Gynae is also an OB - an amazing one at that. She works @ Birthright (i think that's what they're called) Remuera with Dr Anil Sharma who is also well renowned obstetrician. Her name is Melinda Hii.

Typing either of their names in Google will bring up their details. Best of luck with trying to conceive

We went with Neil Pattison at Pregnancy Partners in Parnell. He was awesome, and I couldn't speak more highly of him. I have had two friends have his partner Denys Court at there births, as he covers for Neil when away, and they found him brilliant as well.

be careful being in manukau and wanting to go to akld - choose someone who only delievers in akld not middlemore and akld or you may end up at MM or with somone not your own spec!!! we live manukau also so I was very careful in my choices as you could not pay me to deliver at MM!!!!

I had anil and loved him - but he not doing deliveries so prewarned us for next time....but glad to hear his side kick is ok!!

cost wise it was $4000 - upside was great treatment and someone to push the hospital for the birth i wanted and also about 20 + scans thruout the pregnancy ( we had probs so this was a total relief for me!!)

We live in Northland and went to the Auckland Obsetric Centre, was about $4000 but worth it and I would so pay that next time, they are all so lovely and so onto it and are available 24 hours a day. I birthed at Auckland through them and went to Birthcare after even though Im from Northland. They are in Parnell under birthcare.

Those of you using specialists in Auckland, did you still have a MW?

In chch and dunedin I only paid $2000....but only got standard scans and saw my MW most of the time and only mainly saw the OB at "milestones" so to speak. But she was always available on the phone should I need her.

Such a price difference between North and South....I think you guys are getting a raw deal ....mind you....I would pay what it took to get a healthy baby delivered with minimal stress

i never saw a midwife until after baby was delivered cos the hospital midwifes do the home visits. i only ever saw my specialist and got scans monthly til 28 weeks, then fortnightly til 36, then weekly. he also pushed for the things i wanted ie, i got to come home same day. i wouldnt pay for a specailist if i was only going to get standard scans and see a MW most of the time but maybe thats just me

Origins are great - small practice and they are all lovely as are the labour and post natal midwives. They deliver at National Women's (Auckland Hospital) and so you get the birthcare entitlements as well.

From memory they are about $4k all up.

My friend has just had baby in Auckland and able to then go to birthcare no extra cost,
My dictor has advised me it would be best to get a specialist due to a chance of molar pregnancy happening again,
I think it would be good for my peace of mind to have the specialist also as I would get more scans and someone will keep a close eye on me, I have to have scans from 5 weeks so atleast I will get to see baby early and have any fears quashed.
I really appreciate all your advise is it funnyof me tht i would prefer a woman????
Now to get pregnant of to "rape" my husband

I had a midwife as my LMC with an OB as shared care when I was pregnant with the gremlins (Mahesh Harilall - at BirthRight) and it cost me $2000. I saw my midwife for all regular appointments and the OB monthly to start with, then fortnightly from about 24 weeks.

i think that is pretty normal for most ppl to want a woman. i was the other way around. lol. i def wanted a guy but i think thats an attitude thing, i get on better with guys IRL and dont have many girl friends. strangely enough i actually feel more comfortable being in a weird and compromising position with a guy than a woman. lol

Nope no MW here at all - they wouldnt touch me with my issues and personally I was pleased as I never want to use a MW if I can help it - MY personal opinion before you all attack!

I could have gone the hospital spec route but there was no guarantee on who I would get through out (altho they try to keep specs to a minimum) and also no idea who would deliver as no guarantees!

I felt VERY comfy with a man as my OB - didnt think i would but i def did! I guess he came with no preconceived ideas of what "his" birth had been like...LOL!

LOL Bombshell.

I'm not in NZ so no help on costs but I had a male OB and I loved him. He was super calm and reassuring and laid back. I have always been one to ask for a female doctor in the past so I didn't expect to feel so comfortable with my OB, but as I say I thought he was awesome

You should be able to ring around the ones mentioned here and go for a chat and see what you think, you can always change your mind

NZPiper, you would have had shared care like Emma and it's cheaper. Some OBs offer it in Auckland. Otherwise it's OB all the way but their MWs offer support postnatally from what friends say.

Interesting...I didnt even know you could "opt out" of the MW thing. My first pregnancy was great and the care I got with my MW and OB was excellent. They really worked as a team (and back then I only paid $900). I remember thinking that I was wasting my money throughout my pregnancy but when things turned pearshaped during labour having the OB was MAGIC!!

2nd time I had SERIOUS issues with my MW and would have happily ditched her if I knew I could. I dont think the option existed. I tried to get to hospital and into labour fast so she wouldnt get there in time...in the end I ditched her right before my induction....but I still needed a MW for labour.

I just didnt realise you could bypass. I would have liked that option.

I went through birthright $4000. Was fantastic, but Anil Sharma decided to give up private obstetrics during that time. I have also met someone who has told me that Melinda Hii has also decided to give up this too. I saw Lisa Meyer after Anil and she was brilliant and so was Mahesh. The only one there I didn't really like was David Ansell who took over Anil. I had a problem and rang him as he was oncall ob and he was rude. The others Lisa, Mahesh, Chern and Valeria are absolutely lovely. Lisa comes out to Dr Peter Volossos room at Botany town centre some Thursday nights.

I too wanted a guy at first, but when I started going to Lisa Meyer she was fantastic and I no longer started to care.

For fees you pay at 18 weeks, 28 weeks and then 36 weeks. They have mw there too and they assign you one for post care. The other good thing about private ob is that for the birth I had a mw who was part of birthright with me for the whole day. We were the only ones at Auck hosp not buzzing.

We will be going through birthright again, hopefully Lisa, but I don't care, and although $4000 is a lot, it is definitely worth it.
