Topic: Supermarket Cheats!!! Posted: 08 February 2010 at 4:35pm |
Now I could put this in the 'General' section, and probably should, but most of my OB friends are in the PP section - so I have to share this with you!
About a month ago I went to Woolworths and bought a small amount of groceries, totalling $45.72 on the itemised screen. When I went to use my Eftpos card, the amount showing up on the Eftpos screen was $95.72 - a difference of $50. I questioned it, and made the checkout lady start the payment process again and all was fine. Today I went to Countdown and spent $115.31, which showed up as such on the itemised screen, but the Eftpos screen showed $125.31, a difference of $10. Again, I made the checkout lady start the payment process again and all was fine... so it pays to check your Eftpos screen ladies!
Each checkout lady swears they saw the same amount on their own screens as what I see on the itemised screen, and both were shocked to see the different amount on the Eftpos screen.
I spoke to the supervisors in both supermarkets at the time (at first I was convinced the first time was a scam!!!) and they think that the operators are hitting a button accidentally that says 'cash out' or something - well surely they would have type in an amount?

Ooo thats dodgy, as an ex checkout chick they would have definatly of had to have entered an extra amount as "cash out", they were probably trying to earn a bit extra???
It also happened to me today. I saw $81.30 on the screen so i gave the guy $100 cash, and he gave me back 10cents! I was like WTF??? Turns out the stupid onecard specials get taken off after they enter the amount or some bull sh*t, so i had to stand there arguing with the guy for 5 minutes before he would open his till and give me my $20 back!

That seems rather fishy, having worked in retail last year, you have to enter the amount into the machine, so either they're rushing and making mistakes or they've under charged someone else and perhaps trying to make up for it with you!!
Then again most supermarkets have a slightly different system now with the touch screen and all and perhaps there are faults with it...
But I've noticed a lot of similar things lately at supermarkets! Especially the checkout people entering items in as more expensive items like peaches as apricots, etc. So you do have to pay special attention!! Seems like I'm forever correcting them for something...!

Oh and what you said about one card... I find swiping it at the start helps, but sometimes when you swipe it and it says thank you, it doesn't actually process it so you don't get the savings and the operators don't tell you - have had a couple tell me and ask me to re swipe.
But I have noticed if you swipe at the end, because it takes a while to process they just go thats $xx.xx you hand them the money and they enter it and you're still waiting for the savings to go through!!

I swipe mine through at the start, there has to be a 'change' in the order (i.e add another item on, or push enter again) for the computer to register that the one card has been swiped, and to take the discounts off... stupid technological glitches!

It's most likely a scam although also possible there was an error. It's quite common to have a greedy person, (no offence to any honest checkout operators) working on a checkout. They enter cashout, it gets charged to you and they pocket the money. Unfortunately it happens semi frequently. When I worked at head office for one of the supermarket chains we probably had at least two people a month being dismissed because of this.
Always check the bottom of your receipt. A lot of people check the items but don't read so far as to see the bottom where it says cash out.

Guess I'm lurking here but thanks for the tip, I shall be way more vigilant. Can they do this if you pay by credit card?
